cut away view of cylinder head

I was wondering if any of you have cut away pictures of a 2.2/2.5 cylinder head. I am concerned that I may not have that much room to raise the ports and to reduce the angles from valve to port entry/exit. I do have some silly stuff floating around in my head that I am going to experiment on an extra head during the holidays.

Either my FSM or MP 2.2/2.5 book had one in it. I'm not at home so I can't check, but someone else here probably has them and might be able to check.

That helps out with the amound of material one could remove, also shows how far a crack between the vavls has to go to reach a water jacket.

Man, your saw is sharp Mine came out all burred/beat up when I tried it... Now if we could just cut one the other direction so we know how 'wide' the ports can go. Tons of power locked up in the width of the runners, shh, trade secret

    Nice pics for sure!

That's what the last two pics are. The first two are along the length of the ports and the last two are a cross section of the ports. Unfortunately the exhaust is the only full one but there are two halves for the intake so you can pretty much figure it out.

I think if the G-head and 3.0l stuff gets up this would be an excelent sticky. I have 3 16V heads but I always like to have a couple spares so if I see another one at the wrecker I was thinking of picking it up and doing the same. That probably won't be for a little while though.

Yes and no. The cut was made through the valve seat, that is in an area that is relatively deep into the port. The next cut, the area Alan is interested in, would be somewhere in middle, between the valve seat and the manifold surface. This is where the port width pinches in and where break throughs are known to occur. This middle area is also where there is risk of breaking through into the floor of the valve box when raising the port although the thickness of this area is accessible to measurement, unlike the water passages on the sides.

That said, these are great pictures and of great value. Thanks.

Re: cut away view of cylinder head

I believe they want it cut dead center between the valve and the start of the port where the manifold mounts. This will allow them to see how thick the metal is on all sides between the port and the water jacket.
