Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

I just replaced the outer beltline strips (window scraper) on my C/S with a generic part from JC Whitney. Its not QUITE the same, but looks factory once installed and only needed to be trimmed to fit.

I chose style 42 (link below). It comes in 48" lengths, so on a T-top car you'll need to cut off about 4 inches. No biggie. Basically you pull the door panel, remove the window glass, unscrew the old stripping being careful not to drop screws or the hockey stick moulding on the outside. You can get away without removing the moulding, BUT have some way to hold it up. It WILL break on you.

Lay the new piece in place, mark it with something, cut to length, drill holes in it with an 1/8" drill bit, and put it all back together. Style 42 has a chrome top, which I didn't like at first but it doesn't look too bad. With a little convincing and gentle tapping, the chrome can be used to cap over where the outer moulding meets the door skin for a nice clean finish.

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow hopefully.

Looking at the JCWhitney site, style 39 might work well too and give you a little more material on the top to cap over everything with.

Didn't get a chance to go out to the shop today. Tomorrow for sure!

Its really super, super easy. Grand total was only about $40. If you order from JCWhitney, do a google search for promo codes first and see what you come up with. I came across one for $10 off or something like that.

Re: Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

Pictures! Some are blurry, sorry.

The weather stripping fit right in the stock location. I had to trim to length and notch the rear to fit over a piece of metal in the door. The small bit in the picture there was my mock up piece after I cut the whole thing to length. Whole holding it in place, I drilled 1/8" holes in the lower portion to mount the new strip exactly like the stock piece.

Some gentle coaxing with a hammer and fingers to make the chrome cap cover the moulding, and I was done. Getting the window back in was a little difficult,as this stuff sits a little lower than stock. If you fold it over putting the window back in, just use your finger or a wooden shim or something to pop the strip back straight. You DO have to remove the windows to do this, or at the very least unbolt them from the carriage and drop them all the way to the bottom of the door. Otherwise you'll never be able to get to all of the screws.

Re: Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

What about using Style 43?? This one looks like it has a rubber top instead of the chrome.. Might look more factory.

Any input??

If you're referring to what I did, then yes. I put them on a T-top car.

T-top and hard top strips are almost the same. T top strips are just a little bit longer . The setup from JCWhitney could be used on either/or as you have to cut-to-fit anyway.

That's freaking awesome. And one of the less expensive options I've seen so far.

Re: Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

Yes the glass needs to come out. The glass blocks access to a few screws in the center of the door. Its not hard to take out. lower the door glass, unbolt it from the frame. raise it up a bit and loosen a 4th bolt that holds the glass steady towards the front. Raise the window most of the way up and tilt it towards the inside of the door to clear the studs from the carriage and gently remove it from the door.

Re: Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

As for taking the glass out, get a set of mini offset screw drivers. When I replaced the power mirror and outer window molding on my 90 I used the offsets to get around the glass. VERY tight fit when the screws are almost out, but it works.

Awesome write up BTW. The CS that im getting will need new scrappers and I think this is the way that I am going to go.

Re: Replaced window scrapers on my C/S today

I just ordered mine. I'm not looking forward to my power lock switch though. The pins always pop out when I remove the door panel. I usually have to disco the battery and take an hour or so getting it all put back together again.
