Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

This was like two months ago. Went up to salt lake to see Bansheenut and go try to kill the tires on my duster. Went out to "mullet road" and failed to kill the tires because my e brake was disconnected and a pain in the butt to reattach.

Boiled the brakes at the end of the long run, first time that ever happened. Happened again once after that on the street after racing at the track and then happened on my last run at the track when I turned the boost up to 14. I never knew the problem because I dont make it a habit of going fast and then slamming on the brakes. On the freeway you dont need to slow down so much.

I shift pretty slow, but I shift way faster in this video then I do at the track. My 1-2 at the track is freaking slow.

Could try that 1/4 inch neoprene insulation foam rattle canned black. I hear tell it looks almost like authentic 1976 crackle finish vinyl.

Purely bad ---. I love the sound of banging rev limiter.

I have noticed that some cameras record sound differently. I dont really think that sound recording does it justice compared to Bansheenut's video camera that uses a tape. This video was taken on a big digital camera that belongs to his roomate.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

Camcorders usually have something like a half inch dynamic mic element, but digicams just have a pea sized electrehet listening through a couple of pinholes. So not really surprising that bass sounds won't come through all that well.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

Arge, I have the car running again, but only 6psi boost right now. I am afraid of that freeze plug that popped out before. Hope it keeps running cause there is a 3000gt/stealth meet I will be going to this weekend and maybe playing on the streets of Salt Lake with Bansheenut. Might accidentally put the grainger valve on too.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

what was wrong with it this time?

any bolts near the freezeplug that you could bolt a chunk of metal to create a mechanical retaining device? prevent it from popping out.... like a 1/4" plate of steel that would extend partway over the freezeplug. drill and tap the metal plate directly over the plug and use a bolt and a locknut to keep the plug in. dont put pressure on it but just touch the plug with the bolt end and lock it with the nut. add a lock washer for good measure.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

Or you could get a punch and stake the freeze plug in.

Its a freeze plug that is sorta behind the flywheel. Most horrid freeze plug I have

I am just worried about it popping out again. I am going to check the headbolt torque. I did a leakdown and got nothing in the coolant, but 6g72 heads tend to flex instead of lift, so if I pushed coolant, it probably already sealed up again when the deck of the head stopped flexing. That is just a guess. I dont think it was detonating when the plug came out so it might have just beent he sustained 4th gear pull and 6000 rpms the water pump was pushing against the thermostat.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

you have a new plug to put in it? sealant? drill and tap for a strap?

i assume you dont want to take it all apart again. well put a hobbs switch in for the coolant system. a high level (above radiator cap level in case venting combustion gasses spikes above the radiator cap setting) and a low level in case it falls cause you lost alot of coolant/the plug pops out. hook them to some LED's and then you can keep an eye on them.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

I was thinking about sensing pressure in the block. I dont really know how to hook something up to read pressure in water.

I could then run no boost 6000 rpms and compare that pressure with me in boost. Then I could have a hobbs switch turn on LED's if block pressure got higher then it was supposed to.

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

buy a cooling system pressure tester and put a 5ft hose on it.

then just use it in the ----pit as a gauge.. and a regular tool the rest of the time

Re: Turbo 3.0 playing on the streets

I think because of the thermostat, the pressure doesnt get into the radiator @ 6000 rpms..maybe it does though.

I really doubt I lifted/flexed the head now.
I just found out I was running my base timing about 25-30 degrees retarded.
