The shaft I sourced was a Donato piece, and it did not have the 5/8 nose extension at the front of the splines that fit into the converter turbine. It is made like a late 904 shaft with a blunt nose.
The consequence of not having that extension is that the 300m shaft will want to walk forward right out of the rear clutch drum.
the stock snap ring will not hold it in place. I initially used one spirolock in place of the stock snap ring (on advise of David Rose), but on inspection even the spirolock was pulling off the snap ring groove.
The final fix was to source two tightly fitting spirolocks and stack them together in the groove, and press the shaft into the rear drum with Loctite 680.....no more problems.
the following photo shows the part number for the proper spirolocks. I sourced them straight from Rotor Clip. Hope this saves you some unneeded aggravation. The Donato input shaft is a nice part, I don't think it can be broken. I have had good luck with his high ratio kick-down lever also.
I did a search on Rotoclip.com for the CG-93ST spirolocks and I got a "no results found" message.

Sorry, I should have given you the McMaster-Carr part number which is 91665A453. (pack of five)

Just to make sure, I just fit two (stacked) onto an input shaft I had laying around to double check; fit perfect, Remember to use Loctite 680 on the splines when you press the shaft into the drum.
I use a pliers to squeeze the circlips tight into the groove. Hope this helps

    Who manufactured the other one?
(The one on the bottom of your pic.)

Warren, yours was manufactured through Donato Engineering, is that correct?
I need to look back and see what pics Warren posted of his, to see if there are any differences.

Thats from the Neon group buy.

Shorter, splines are shaved down, surface is shot peened.

Find out who did those for that group buy. Then we can contact John, unless you already have.

    Perhaps this picture will help.

Banged a shaft out of a drum this morning, didn't take a steel measure to it but looks pretty close.

Correct, Mine was made by Donato, Looks just like the top one in Ondonti's pic. I don't have a photo of mine that I remember, but if it turns out the converter splines are too long (and I doubt that's the case) then just cut to length and dress the end.
Your convertor Manufacturer can make the hub to fit the shaft anyway, no big deal.

Just looked at my notes, converter splines need to be at least 1.086 long ,27 splines. Also, I have a few old 904 torque flites laying around and none of them have the same spline length. Just give your converter guy all the dimensions and he will make it fit. Its really no big deal.

PS. Imho, the bottom shaft in ondonti's photo looks like an inferior piece.

When you say, "Just give your converter guy all the dimensions and he will make it fit" would it be just as good to hand them the input shaft and say, "Make this converter work with this shaft?"

I have never even looked at a 3 speed so the visual differences were odd. I still don't have a visual understanding of the problem you listed above.

The lower shaft is shot peened and seems to be what the Neon guys are using. The shot peening must change some tolerances on those splines. Still Usually a good thing for anything in aerospace when it comes to preventing cracks.
