Nitrous bottle for a custom intake upper plenum?

Are they aluminium and if so, would it be a good choice, if I got the right size?

You know, I was considering a fire extinguisher when I was starting my manifold. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

sure, I dont see why not. They are just way thicker material than you would ever need, but otherwise should work.

note: not all of those bottles are aluminum. Some are spun glass or carbon fiber, BUT you should be able to tell just by looking at them.

With a few expensive exceptions, they will all be aluminum, 6061 to be exact. About 1/4" thick in the wall and about 1/2" in the base and neck. The tough part might be finding one that will get you the volume you want at the right length. The most common bottle is the a 10lber and are 7" dia, by about 25" tall. The older NOS bottles (made by Kiddie), were about 6 3/8" dia and about 27" tall. That's the one I would thiink would do the trick, but I don't know what you have in mind, I'm just thinking about packaging. If you look around, you can likely find an old used bottle for cheap! There are other options too, oxygen, or CO2 bottles, if these dimensions don't do the trick.

Why not just buy some aluminum stock and build the entire thing yourself. It might be a little easier with the bottle, but you'll still have to cut it in half to weld up the runners. I got a 12"x12" 1/8th" thick peice of aluminum, and a 4" tube 18" long the same thickness for around $30. Not that bad of a price I don't think, but there are probably better deals out there. I got all my metal from www.onlinemetals.com, they were great, it was at my door in less then 3 days from ordering. I believe they are from the seattle area, just another option.

Larry Buford from Kansas City used a fire extiguisher for his Neon head 16v conversion.

    FWIW:

Ohio Rob uses a stock Stratus manifold and runs 10.0 without a plenum - makes me wonder how necessary they really are....

A few things on that, he's using NOS, I am running a TIII head and using the stock distributor so the stock intake has to be modified so if going to the hassle of modding the intake, might as well build a new one.

Im sure if you went to a welding supply shop or something like that you could probably find a used bottle that out of date.

no go, welding gasses are in steel bottles, aswell they are re-certified every couple years, they dont get thrown away (i have had bottles with date stamps from the 60's)
