    Hybrid questions and OBX

Hoping to get a few answers..as I have tried to piece together info from several threads.

I have a 1987 555 tranny. Also have intermediate shaft and ring gear from (what i was told) 1987 520 3.50 ratio.

Upon putting it together, the gears don't stack up the same. The 2 shafts have splines of different widths and C-clip grooves don't match up on the 520 shafts as they did on the 555 shaft. Is this normal??

Looking to buy an OBX and not sure if a new unit needs the bevel washers or not?? Anyone know?

Also, if I read correctly the OBX spacer plate is only for the 413 auto...Not a 555??

Can the OBX be installed in the 555 tranny with the 3.87 ratio...Without having to go with the 3.50 from the 520??

Lastly...Where can I get a new 2nd gear from?? Mine from the 555 appears to have quite a bit of wear and I need a new or good used one??

Hope this thread gets all the info into one thread. I have read 3 different boards about about 500+ threads on this topic and nothing concrete seems to pan out to what I am seeing on the bench.

Also, trying to get a hold of Cliff mopartek@***.com...I heard he is busy with a shop move. Maybe he will see this thread and chime in. Would like to talk with him for a few on the phone....Or anyone that has done these hybrids.

    Thanks.

Oh yeah another question. The 525 parts for upgrade list a chromoly end plate that is roughly .190 in measure.

The 555 appears to have that same thickness plate. My old 525 also has one. Is there a difference...Or is the 555 already setup with the thicker plate from the factory??

One of the two trannies sounds like a 1989 unit. The spines on the 1/2 stack will be narrow with wide gaps between them on the 89. The early one has normal-looking splines. You can't interchange them.

    Re: Hybrid questions and OBX

Just got off the phone with rbryant and he seems to think the same. Possibly a 520 from a 1989 rather than a 1987 as the guy said.

The 1/2 stack on the 555 shaft is engaged in splines all the way. But when stacked on the 520 shaft, the 2nd is half off the splines and no C-clip location to hold it all together. So guess I am looking for a 1987 520 shaft now.

I will post pics when I can...gotta take them tonight.

Seems that everything is under control here. It does sound like your trying to mix 87-88 parts with 89 parts but pics will tell for sure.

Here is a pic of the shafts.

The bottom shaft is the 555 with the C-clip in the spline.

The top doesn't. Also the splines are different lengths.
