rebuilt a413 slipping. too much fluid?

Maybe slipping isn't the right word. But sometimes, when the van is cold I'll put it in gear I'll notice one of two problems. Either...

    A) it will shift really late 1-2 and 2-3, or not at all.

    B) it will rev considerably without going any faster in first.

The first time it did "A" i blindly added a little more fluid, which seemed to fix the problem.

Noticed fluid leaking out of the pan and Speed Sensor fitting so I thought that's why it was getting low.

Tightened pan bolts and sealed sensor with silicone (in case O-ring wasn't sealing). Then noticed "B".

Checked fluid today and it's over the hot mark by quite a bit.

Can having too much fluid in it cause the above, or do you think it's some other problem?

Fluid is bright red and smells as good as that stuff can smell.

    Thanks. JR

"A" is most likely due to a kickdown cable out of adjustment, or less likely due to a sticking throttle valve or kickdown valve within the valve body.

"B" can be happen due to a few problems, one which is too much fluid. A high fluid level can get whipped up and become aerated, which causes loss of pressure, and slippage, or dropping out of gear.

Correct the fluid level, and adjust the kickdown cable for starters, then see if the tranny behaves like it should.

Do you see any bubbles on the stick? Romp on it real quick and get the fluid warm, let it idle for a bit and check the stick for bubbles. That "usually" means too much fluid.
