    Swapping valve seals

    *sigh*

I should have done this while the head was off last week, but seeing the play in the turbo shaft, I thought for sure the oil smoke was from the turbo. Smokes at stop lights. So, I swapped the turbo and it didn't smoke at all. But, the next day I get around to fresh oil and filter. I was quite low on oil which is apparently why it didn't smoke. Now that I'm topped with fresh oil, it is smoking again.

I guess I'll swap the valve seals. I have a fitting for the air compressor, but I was wondering what style of valve spring compressor works best with the head on the car?

I've got one of them.... somewhere. Didn't know if there was enough room to use it. Guess it's worth a shot!

No way! the best style to use on the car is the lever style with the two hooks that fit over the cam. I have used both, and would use the lever style in a heartbeat over the screw style one.

That is true. Fortunatly I found a place locally up in MI that would sell me stuff for really cheap since they knew that I was just an el. ed. student trying to fix his cars. There was a young guy there that was always giving me good deals. He actually let me have the lever style compressor at his cost, which was about 1/2 of retail.

The place was called stuart tool and they are in troy MI. I know they will ship if you order $50 or so from them. Heck of a deal for SK when I was there. Hardly more than the craftsman stuff even on sale.

Hmmm, going to have to do some digging. Anyone got part numbers of the lever style?

I'll probably just weld something together. Hooks under the cam and pivots there. Then presses on the retainer. I have a stud mounted one for the race car, but TD's don't have rocker studs!!

The one I use is KD tools PN 3087. YOu have to be a little creative with it to use it with the manifolds on, but once you have it setup it is a breeze.

That is the one. YOu have to adjust the handle so that the little bolt is in the top position and the arm is free above it. This will allow proper clearance for the intate (just barely) so you can use it with the head on. It works great!

Yep, just remember that you have to set the handle up that funky way, or you will be cursing my name for some time!

    Re: Swapping valve seals

I was lucky enough to find a new one (kd 3807) on ebay for 20$ or so a year or so ago. I really like it.
