    Intermediate shaft installled incorrectly?

I just had my 1987 Shelby Lancer 2.2 engine rebuilt, and I know when I put the intermediate shaft in it just sort of slipped in, no spacers, nothing on the shaft.

I now have a very loud knock when I get off the throttle that is clearly from the intermediate shaft moving in and out.

Also, the timing moves all around which I believe is related.

I have the three books for 1987, but I don't see any instructions for installing the shaft and/or the oil pump. It all seemed obvious
when I put it together but now I'm concerned I missed a spacer or a washer?

The shaft and the oil pump are not new, they were in the engine when I took it apart.

    Any ideas would be appreciated

the seal retainer should be holding it in position

In addition, putting the pulley on backwards will not allow the engine to rotate in my experience.

Have you checked the shutter under the HEP to make sure it's not loose?

Thanks everyone for the quick replies, I ended up taking the oil pan off for a second time and actually took the nuts of the connecting rod and
the actual rod bearing was bad.

Sadly, what sounded like a rod knock was a rod knock...

Brand new engine, guess it's time to start that one over.

That's terrible. Did you rebuild it in the garage, or did you take it some place? I hope they make it right if it was a shop.
