    Best Oil for Slider Cams

I have a Mopar "Purple" cam in the Lancer Shelby. I just revived it with a new clutch, and some PT lifters. Does anyone have any advice regarding oil for the slider cams? Is that even the reason why the S60 cams and the like wipe out the lobes so quickly? I don't want to replace this thing in just a few thousand miles like I did the last big slider cam I had in a car.

You need ZDDP (a zinc based compound) in the oil. So if the oil doesn't have ZDDP, you will need to get a ZDDP additive to put in.

Many oils for diesel engines may still have ZDDP, but I don't know for sure... I would go with an additive.

Most parts stores should have a ZDDP additive in stock on the shelves....

Thanks. I'll look into that. I think it was an FM505 which was in my car years ago when I bought it. It didn't last long and the wear was impressive.

I spoke with an oil expert, and he said that he would recommend Redline for our application. He suggested that it's what he runs in his tuned Raptor and that it should be great for a slider cam due to the extra ZDDP.

Brad Penn oil also has high ZDDP in it. Penn grade1 is the flavor you would want. They also make a non high ZDDP oil

Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen the same guy recommend the Brad Penn highly, but I've forgotten about it until your post. It has never been widely available in my area for some reason.

There's nothing sliderish in a Raptor, so I don't know that I'd use that as a metric.

I've had VR1 recommended to me for slider/flat tappet stuff. Probably that or similar race oils, or any brand name 5w30 or 10w40 basic oil and zinc/zddp additive will work fine. Brad Penn oil has always been a top recommendation for flat tappet applications too.

Agree 100% high zddp levels plugs cat cons. That's why it's been dropped to low levels from modern engine requirements.

the real question is, how much do you need? I know people that run rotella T6 with flat tappet cams on purpose due to the higher zinc and phosphorous content. I have it in my reliant right now even though I have a roller cam. 15w40. and it has more zinc than the mobil 1 that i was running.

All that's doing is creating More drag in the engine and lowering your fuel mileage. For a race engine heavier oil is fine for a daily. Not worth it.

Re: Best Oil for Slider Cams

Mt S-60 cam has over 20 yrs. on it and is still in fine condition.

I found out many years ago in my SBC days that regular wheel bearing grease is the best break in lube.

And, with any slider cam one must ensure the cam caps are slider compatible with oil spray slots.

I've run every type, weight and combination of oils over the years imaginable.

I think the break in procedure and lube is of vital importance.

    Thanks
    Randy

There is no logical reason to call an Engine a motor.

Still got 34mpg. I'll run what I can easily get at a store 5min from my house for the best price.
