Is that the bigger one toward the. Middle of the board on the lm or all of the smaller ones.

On the LM it is the one in the centre 220uF Axial IIRC, Also the PM caps could also be questionable. If you need details, LMK

Thanks. That's what I thought. I'll see what they measure. I'm going to order up a new alternator too. I think I might have some caps in the basement which will drop right in. That may be a good idea either way.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

I found a 160 amp unit on Amazon for $100. If that works at all, then this one is surely bad. If it gets worse, perhaps it's the stock stuff struggling to control the high amp units? Something must be done, so that will hopefully do it. I'll check my cap stash in the basement and see if I need to order a new one.

I test all caps in my ECUs, with approx 1/3 defective... but I replace them all anyway.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

I thought I was posting in thisthread when I was actually posting in the mp scandroid thread..

The new alternator is the roughest looking remanufactured unit I've ever seen, but the result is nearly the same. I have since swapped the two field terminal wires to see if that would make any difference at all, and it did not.

Should I just try an external regulator at this point? It seems like it may save a lot of trouble, but it could just be another failure point and layer od complexity I don't need. Either way, it is incredibly frustrating.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

Brian, just to confirm with the field coil connection removed the engine is fine....correct?
If so, I am unclear how an external regulator will remove the issue, but with that said 35 year old demons don't act as expected

Correct. It ran very well with the field terminals disconnected. It acts the same with this new alt installed. I'm going to try the remote regu, ator to mow and report back.

you got good replacement part numbers for the SMEC caps? Im running a NOS SMEC power board (still cant hurt to replace caps) and logic board that wont accept a flash module. so it cant hurt to recap and resocket another SMEC logic board with a flash module and touch up a Power board..... and replace my ignition switch and some power feed wiring as i get a strange power blip ever once in a while.

I installed an external voltage regulator today. The voltage is now rock solid. The car still cuts out.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

does it cut out when just driving or does it happen when you step into it?

had a daytona with a cut out .. took a couple of months after getting the car to find the coil wire terminal in the coil on the fender was lose so when I stomped on it the weight of the coil wire shifting around broke the connection

It will cutout under all conditions, although it does almost seem like I can get it to kick back in with more throttle. I'm thinking that's just in my head.
