    High amp alternator wiring

I have always read of guys using the Durango alternators which output a higher current. I recently picked up one which is rated at 136 amps.

For those of you who have done this, how did you modify the wiring? The field terminals are easy, as I just bought the connector for the alternator and will splice it in. I did pick up some 2ga tefzel wire for the ground and power feed to the battery.

Have you guys completely redone the alternator section of the wiring, or just laid the new, larger wire over top of the existing harness?

This case doesn’t have a boss for a ground like ours do. How have you guys handled that aspect of installation?

Any tips, especially with pictures would be great.

hmmmm. i just tossed it in there with the stock wiring. no issues here. I probably should add some additional +12v and gnd jumpers on top though now that I think of it.

im also not nuking the wiring with 10 million watts of lighting yet though....

I do have a banging stereo though....

I'll let you know what I do. Right now the plan is to run 2ga wire from the positive post, and ground it behind the nut for the adjuster against the case. There really isn't a good spot to ground it on this one I have.

I believe 2001 with the v8 has the 136 and 160 options available.

I used 1/0 welding cable to make my alternator to battery, battery to starter, and battery to ground cables.

Yes, it's overkilled, but I'll never have issue again.

I don’t blame you. Did your alternator have the provisions for the ground, or did you do something else with it?

Believe it was a Dakota my 130amp alt came from in my glht. Had you swap pulleys but it was a direct bolt in. I didn't change the wiring and never had an issue

the case is the ground. my harness had a ground connection that connected up to one of the studs on the alternator iirc. Above the field current terminals is the case ground. you can add additional ground wires to any point on the case.

this is the one i bought.... direct bolt in minus a little clearancing of the factory molded connector as the body is a bit larger than the original 90A.

The one I have out of the 01 Durango is a bit different. No provision for the ground.

Around 1999 the case changed and all those extra unused threaded studs were eliminated. On the better side, the field connections went from the open stud terminals to the sealed connector.

Although $25 from Amazon, that connector will be a huge improvement Over the very fine thread small diameter bolts which held them on once before snapping off. I gladly paid their price.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

One of those studs snapping off was the death of the original alternator on the Shadow. The only good point I could make with the oem molded connector thing was it had enough force to hold the field terminal of the broken stud against its terminal and kept working long enough to get another alternator installed. Of course now everything gets treated with anti-seize of some flavor, after having converted that plug to individual ring terminals once it melted down if another stud were to snap off it would be game over instantly.

Alternator gets ground from the block. My ground cables goes from the block to the negative side of the battery.

Thanks. We’ll see how my setup works out. I think it should be fine, if not a bit cumbersome.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

Just curious, did you have to swap pulleys? I have a Nipp 117 amp leftover from my 2000 Wrangler conversion project. It has the serpentine pulley on it, but pretty much looks like it would fit. Would like to be able to use it on my Rampage project.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

I didn’t swap the pulleys. They appear to have a different shaft diameter. It fits just fine, but there are of course two I used ribs on the newer pulley. I’m fine with that

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

i swapped pulleys on mine but mine was for a 1994 application and swapped right over.

In fact, when my alternator on my 97 wrangler died, i used the 90a alternator that was on my reliant (and was still fine) and swapped the jeep pulley onto that alternator and swapped it in. The jeep uses the bolt on terminals for that year.

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

I have been seeing a cutout on this car and I think it is most likely caused by the alt. The voltage fluctuates and I think there may be too much AC ripple causing the computer to freak out. Has anyone had to do anything differently for the wiring on these?

    Re: High amp alternator wiring

Brian, you also may want to check the caps on your ECU. The input 12V is designed to smooth ripple for the ECU.
