I FOUND A COLOR CORRECT tilt steering in a yard, but no keys.
How much of an issue is this? Can a key be made? Or to get the
cylinder out, you need the key?

You don't need the key to get the cylinder out. I'm not sure if I misspoke and said that you need the key in my video, but for a Saginaw column you only need to push up on the key in chime actuator piece and then push in the piece in the slot that retains the cylinder. Once you do that you can pull or push out the cylinder.
I really don't understand"........

when you push the key in, a leaver pops out the side of the cylinder to actuate the key in ingition switch. think thats wwhat cordes is talking about.

Go to 12:50 in the video. It shows how you pull the cylinder without the key.
Thanks, I see. Need to take the wheel off, etc to do it....but it is possible.
Thank you!

Necro thanks! When you said to grab the key to remove the tumbler I thought I was hooped. The lack of a key was the reason I am removing it. But you came through a few seconds later with the no key required.
Thanks!
to get the steering lock plate off (locking steering not key lock) you need to either buy or make a tool
I prefer make the tool
you will need one 2.2 thermostat housing, a big washer , maybe , the nut from your steering collumn and a hacksaw, grinder or dremel
first cut the neck off the T stat housing at the point where the rounded bell shape begins below it
now you need to cut a window in the side of the housing.. it needs to be large enough to let you get inside it with your snap ring pliers
cut a rectangular hole in the housing..leave the lower gasket flange intact
you need the strap of the gasket flange intact so as the housing doesn't spread & crush as you tighten the nut
put housing over shaft put nut and washer on , tighten nut to compress spring under lock plate.. remove snap ring , remove "tool" and lock plate
30 years ago the real tool only came from the chevy dealer for 140 bucks (cdn).. this is how I got around that one night at about 3AM
I thought about making one, ended up at Princess auto (Canadian HF) and got one for $17. Locksmith punched in the code, machine popped out the key.
Wish I had the factory blank, but someday will come across the one I safely put away 🙄
