Any patient desk top geeks or experts on board??

I'm as dumb as a rock when it comes to computers.

I have an old desk top that has been acting up lately.

It's not working as good as it has been for the past 10 yrs.

Things like scrolling, highlighting etc. have become very erratic.

One main symptom is when there is sound it comes out buzzing.

Also, if I get a notice on the lower right, it presents appears stretched out.

Sort of like a bar code if that makes any sense to anyone following.

I presently have windows 7 but I hope that's not my issue.

Possibly someone can walk me through some diagnostics??

Any input is gratefully accepted if anyone has the time!!

    Thanks
    Randy

    Hi Randy,
I would suggest you check a few item
1)make sure C drive is not full
    2)clear browser cache
    3)remove unused programs
    4)defrag your drive

Re: Any patient desk top geeks or experts on board??

K,.. first .. problems scrolling and highlighting..

Q.. how old is your mouse?
and how is it connected to the PC.. cable, USD dongle (receiver on a usb cord) or the usb bug you plug in a usb slot

a few years of finger oil might be the problem .. cat hair is bad too..

and how long has the problem been happening?

you can click on the windows logo at the farthest left side of your tool bar ..
then click on control panel .. when the list comes up
then click on system and security
then click on restore your computer..
then click on "open system restore"
then .. check the restore date & time offered..
if not before you started having issues..
click on show other restore points/times..
look for something before the issue started .. hopefully you can find one..
click on that restore point and proceed
the computer will shut down and restart.. it will take a few moments to go through it's thing .. and maybe , your issue is resolved..

but I'd also just try another mouse too..

oh I should add.. system restore will set your computer back to the way it was at that restore point
    but
you will not lose anything you have saved since then..

if you made changes to your desktop .. things might get relocated slightly

    Hey Johny:

Mouse is old, came with computer, might as well get a new one anyway.

It has a cord that plugs into the computer USB??

Will try to muster the courage to do a system restore.

Its been slowly getting fussy for a few months but worse lately.

    Thanks !!

Re: Any patient desk top geeks or experts on board??

some mouse's and keyboards have round plugs at the computer .. those are called "PS2"

the flat plug that fits in a slot is a USB connector

PS2 was made obsolete ten years or more ago .. everything is usb now

my beloved gearhead mouse and Logitec LIGHTED cordless bluetooth keyboard both died this year .. gave me ten years great service..

if you buy a mouse look for one with the USB bug that fits a usb slot in the computer

and look for one with page forward and page back buttons .. beats the hell outta chasing the <> arrows at the top left of the page
my gearhead mouse also had side scrolling.. just push the wheel sideways to move the page left or right

I see if I can find you some links..

I did replace my mouse with a cheap asian one.. it's a cheap rip off of the gearhead mouse that works .. eah , ok..got it off ebay for something silly like six bucks..

I'll look for a link if I can find one..it took a little while to show up though .. free shipping .. proverbial slow boat from .. you know where..lol

Re: Any patient desk top geeks or experts on board??

oh yeah.. unlike my old mouse this one has an on off switch to save battery life when not using it

it also , unlike my old mouse..goes to sleep and turns it's self off if it sits for a short while unused ... this helps battery life hugely

when batteries die the curser stops moving and freezes in place on screen

oh and it had some eratic scrolling action for a while .. wheel squeaked too

running it up n down my thigh seemed to "break it in" though it was a beast for a while

it's smaller than average and feather light.. I hate breakin out my old microsoft mouse when I need batteries ..sooo much

it's big fat and heavy and worst .. no page fwd n back buttons

    Miles, you're the best!!

I found a vid on "2)clear browser cache" and I think I'm good now.

I found one on "4)defrag your drive" but it automatically does this every Wed

Will look into "3)remove unused programs" if I can figure out which ones to keep.

    THANKS!!!!!

    Randy

PS: Thanks Johnny for your input!!

On a serious note, if your mouse is old like mine and has a ball on the belly you can open the ball compartment and clean the "lint" of the three rollers. A toothpick works well to remove the hardened "lint". Yes it is not really lint but.....

WAAAY back in the day, this was the procedure for fixing mouse balls:

Mouse balls are now available as FRU (FieldReplacement Unit) therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls.

Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist-off method.

Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge.

Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction. Any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.

Appreciate the offer but I'm going great now.

But, please stop by next time you come to town.

I always have lots of questions for smart guys.

Plus, I still have your intake if you need it.

    Thanks

I sure glad I have the red light mouse.

I'd never be able to change any mouse balls.

Appreciate the great procedure instructions Warren !!

    Thanks
