    Timing belt tensioner?

    Hey guys,

Could somebody point me in the right direction for a timing belt tensioner ('89 TII round tooth)?

I'd like to add this to my tool collection, but don't want to end up getting the wrong thing. I'd appreciate it, thanks!

Found it at Toolshackweb for about $26 shipped! Called them to make sure they were legit, they seem trustworthy.

Glad you found one. Does rock auto not have them? I should probably do more comparison shopping, but between them and Amazon I find they’re they best deals for the least hassle.

I think he meant the weighted wrench tool for setting the timing belt pulley.

Correct! I guess I could have been more concise in my original post. But yes, I was referencing the "Special Tool CTA 1018".

That makes sense. Glad you found one. I was really surprised by how little force it requires when I got mine.

I imagine I've been over-tightening now that I've felt how much weight (or how little) this tool has..but I've just been using the 90 degree twist method and in 15 years have never had any issues, so I guess I wasn't THAT far off 🤷

We'll see this weekend when I'm back at the shop.

    Re: Timing belt tensioner?

usually it's the tool weight plus a little thumb pressure .. mostly to keep things from turning as you tighten the tensioner bolt

usually I tension the belt by sound.. the tensioner starts to make a cricket like sound when just right
to tight and the cricket gets to loud

if a 2.2 drives up and stops in front of you and you hear a really loud cricket like sound...the tensioner is either way to tight or fubar

usually I tweek it for the right barely audible cricket sound by removing the steering belt and doing the final tension adjustment while the car is running via the access hole in the timing cover

though if dealing with an old belt it's often wise to just leave it alone because if to tight it's probably been streached
