Glue for rear side panel carpet 84 Laser

Can anyone tell me what kind of glue to use for the rear hatch carpeted side panels on my 84 Laser? The original glue was pretty thick, but not applied very well. I completely removed the carpet from the side panels and cleaned all the old glue off, now I need to reglue them. The original glue wasn't a contact cement as it was a clearish yellow single stage type product almost like a hot glue, but it was still a little sticky. My guess is that it needs to have some thickness to compensate for the fact that the carpet isn't an exact fit to the plastic panel underneath. I might end up bringing them to an upholstery shop to see what they think, but I really don't want to wait months for them to get around to the job. Especially since the panels are fragile and would be almost impossible to replace if they get cracked or broken. Thanks!

I remember a friend who worked for a conversion van company telling me about a glue pot when I was thinking about doing a custom headliner many years ago. Does anyone have experience with something like that, possibly a heated glue? I'm open to something more modern or different than what was used originally as well.

My concern with contact cement is that I will only gt one shot at getting it on straight. I guess I could do a little at a time, I still feel like there has to be a better option.

that's how I did it.. a part or section at a time.. starting with the pocket / back side of the wheelhouse..working outwards from there

I just wish I knew a source for new carpet to make the trunk/hatch floor piece with as the hatch floor carpet is usually a little to small

I'm still not done with this project, although I'm getting close. My recommendation to anyone thinking about trying this would be to clean up the edges and glue them with contact cement, do not remove the entire carpet. It's impossible to get it to sit flat after it's been removed due to the thickness of the original glue.
