Opinions on Turbo for Spirit R/T

Today I developed a severe exhaust manifold leak and figured while I'm changing the gasket I'd upgrade the turbo. I'm looking to have a setup similar to Larry's old 4SFED4 R/T.

I’d spend up to $800 or so for the right turbo

    only 400? nothing larger than a GT3076R.

improved manifolds and some headwork would make 400hp with the right engine management.

I've noted the ratings for the newer GTX3076 are the same as the olderGT3082 was rated for ..

Yes, Gen II Garrett GTX series flows like 20% more than Gen 1. So a GTX3071R will flow about the same as a GTX3076R Gen 1. Just spools up about 500 RPM quicker. Some of these Gen II GTX3071's are making 600+ HP with larger .82 AR exhaust housings. Just have to pay for them (lol). They're like $1800-2k+.

Why are you guys suggesting ball bearing billet turbos when his budget is $800. They're over twice that $.

Take your stock turbo, rebuild it with a T04E housing, back plate, and a T04E 50 trim compressor wheel.

Re: Opinions on Turbo for Spirit R/T

I posted a thread a year or so back where I asked .."GT3082..??"

a chorus of voices answered back GT3076..

so I went back to the Garrett listings.. and found the GTX3076..and like everything I read about it

if some is good more is better
if more is better then to much should be just right

seems the GTX3076 vs the GT3082 might be the better approach towards to much...

somewhere in my saved page shortcuts I"ve saved a link for a genuine Garrett GTX3076 "super core" , no turbine housing , listed for 1400 bucks with an as cast compressor housing
about the same as the older gt3082 was again with no turbine housing

    EDIT....that ^ shoulda read I found a GTX 30/76 for 1400 bucks ,, sorry..corrected it

I wasn't aware of a "good" turbo for 800 bucks .. 'cept the ebay stuff and I don't wanna go there

$800 is just a ball park I figured I’d see what’s out there. I’ll spend more if needed

An he351 and a billet wheel could be done for under 800 and in my opinion is a good turbo

    lol , no,
"cobbled together" .. is outside my range of knowing what I'm doing.. and I have no "turbo shop" to take things to ..even if it wasn't
..you know for balancing.. which I know I'd need after swapping shafts n wheels and all things boost-ie..

new inna box.. THAT works for me .. 'specially with a warranty

you guys can spool out turbo model numbers , "trim, stage this or that compressor housing a or b etc ,.. and ya kinda lose me..I "get" the basic wheel sizes Garrett use and understand what I'm dealing with .. then, .. and I'm familiar with how it's going to actually physically fit with my other parts ..

I didn't mean cobbled in a demeaning way .. it's just not "my bag"

that and I don't have a time limit or final cost limit .. just collect what I can , as I can , when I can
