    powertrain removal

I was planning to remove the powertrain from the CSX over the winter. I was also planning to remove the crossmember and update to 91+ etc.
Since the wheel are going to be removed I am looking for idea to keep the front end off the garage floor.
1)use my Quick jacks to support the car on rocker panel jack points.
2)use axle stands at the square "frame" just rear of the firewall.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Miles

I use jack stands on the frame rails when I have done motor/trans swaps. Have done it that way when I removed the crossmember for repair also

    Re: powertrain removal

if you stop by before they freeze to the ground I'll loan ya my nice SOLID concrete blocks..been using them for decades.. no they won't crack...
    I have two
slip them with a piece of 2x6 on top under the frame rails and you're safe to crank on the crossmember bolts

jackstands become wobbly when you start pullin' stuff sideways like the big breaker bar you'll need for those bolts

you've seen the 5 foot railway bar I use to separate balljoints without dropping the sway bar.. with THAT lever you can actually lift the opposite side of the car right off the jackstands while prying the control arm down..thus really making things dangerous

and remember I have an engine crane too if needed ..and lots of chain

an old junky wooden mechanic's creeper makes the perfect cart for rolling the engine/trans out from under the car.. in fact all ya really need is a trolly jack, some thick gloves and a bar to slip through the pass side mount for lifting once the top end is off the motor ..done that in & out a few times too

I have one of those ya can borrow too .. junkie wooden creeper

an hour or so worth of pullin stuff off and it's on the garage floor easy peasy.. if you need help ya know who to call lol

you "could" pull it out over the passenger fender but I REALLY don't recommend it ESPECIALLY if your garage floor has ANY tilt / slope from front to back ..

I've witnessed the engine crane & motor/trans tipping over... trans end cover leaves a REALLY big dent in the front half of the quarter panel .. thank fully .. that was someone else's problem...

not to sound like I'm bragin' but my 86 turbo z went from empty engine compartment at lunchtime saturday to running waiting for test drive sunday morning at 6am

full short block to long block assy, TII top end and wiring + 520 conversion and.. ALL cleaned , detailed & painted "almost" show quality.. (yeah.. big smile .. faster n a brand new vette right then and there...1998..cough)

on G bodies I've always used the front motor mount bracket on the rad crossmember as a jacking point for the front end
if the crossmember is not cracked or rusted it's strong enough
