    Engine removal/installation ??

Anyone have any tips on complete Engine removal from the top.

Specifically, where/how do you attach the lifting chain to the Engine?

I've never found a great method so please share your tips.

Now that I'm one handed, Engine removal/installation is challenging!

    Thanks
    Randy

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

I always use a cherry picker from the top and always pull the engine and trans together. On the passenger side, I have a large hook on the end of the chain and wrap the chain once around the motor mount bracket starting from the back (firewall) side and then hooking into the bracket itself. On the driver side, I usually use a long 12mm bolt and bolt the other end of the chain to one of the upper bell housing bolt holes.

kms tools used to sell a cheap load leveler turn the crank handle to add tilt front and rear of the engine i always left the hood on the charger good for you for even trying to do it with 1 hand!

cut the head off a belhousing bolt and cut a slot into it to fit a screwdriver and use it as a stud to line up the engine to the belhousing the stud can be removed with a screwdriver

Appreciate the reply Jeremy, that's about how I've normally been doing it.

    Thanks

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

That's a great idea Dick, I've never used one of those.

I got the Engine/trans out of the Minivan with some help.

Now the plan is trying to get it in my Omni, hopefully with more help.

I'm just installing the Engine alone as the manual trans is still in the car.

It was challenging just getting it on an Engine stand so I could clean it up.

Hopefully Princes Auto has a leveler in stock, the price seems reasonable.

It should help a lot as I can probably bolt it to each end of the cylinder head.

I had a very hard time with the chain only trying to keep it on an even keel.

All I thought I knew I'm slowly attempting to learn over again !!

    Thanks
    Randy

    Another good idea!!

Too bad you weren't here helping me think this through.

I'm hoping my friend Brian, Speedfreek 500, can lend a hand.

He lives a long way off but he thinks he can spare me some time.

My Omni has been idle too long, I need a ride before winter, hopefully!!

    Thanks
    Randy

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

I was there today and never even thought about one.

Thankfully my old buddy Dick mentioned it, I'd probably be tangled up in chain.

    Thanks

I generally remove the crank pulley, gives you a little extra clearance...

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

    Right on !!

    Another good point.

I bought a leveler today for full price.

It should make balancing the Engine much easier.

2.2/2.5's sure aren't as easy to handle as good old SBC's.

However, I do refer to them as the SBC of 4 cylinder Engines!

    Thanks
    Randy

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

Dick, I spent the day cleaning up the shop contemplating the Engine job.

I work very slow these days and been sorting through years of treasures.

Tough time to try and sell stuff but I'm going to list some eventually.

Second load of junk in my propane Chevy van to take to the dump.

Took some scrap metal in and collected $27.00!!

That's better than paying dump fees I guess.

    Talk to you soon!

    Thanks
    Randy

PS: I bought a small dirt bike for clutch action-hand therapy.

I think its the best left hand rehab possible if I don't fall off!!

    1980 Honda XL 185 S

It's in fair condition considering it's 40 yrs old and it starts and runs well.

Its a little tall for my liking so I'm trying to figure out how to lower it.

Opening my left hand controllably is also one of my issues too.

Hopefully engaging the clutch will be good therapy.

This summer my nephew let me ride his bike.

    A KTM Adventure 1290 with 160 HP

It's very tall and extremely fast!!

    Got me thinking small Enduro.

    Thanks
    Randy

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

keep the chain ends as short as possible on the load leveler i pulled my engine many times with the hood on, saves one extra step of having to put your hood back on, and aligning it to close properly especially if you are working on it alone with one hand short chains will make the unit smaller to slide out under the hood i rarely pulled the engine with the trany together as i hated messing with the ball joints the dirt bike sounds fun! my right hand does not open at all, just forms a gibbled fist hope you get it running before snow comes your way and you have to park it in an igloo shop!keep a look out for hungry polar bears! later!,Dick

    Re: Engine removal/installation ??

I finally gathered the strength to roll my car outside to wash the Engine bay.

It's still a chore to walk to my shop that's only about 100 ft. from the house.

The darn stroke a few years back has robbed me of all strength and energy.

But the bellyaching is over, for now, I'm proudly finished the washing!!

Next up is to complete a few small details on the replacement Engine.

And then to begin the install, hopefully with some help!

A big hello to my pal boost geek!!

    Thanks
    Randy
