    Coolant Sensor

1986 New Yorker turbo car is taking longer for the cooling fan to come on. Makes me kind of nervous sitting in traffic. When I unplug the sensor, the fan comes on immediately. Could the sensor be going bad and not let the fan come on?

It's unlikely. Do you know what temp the fan is kicking on at? The computer is programmed to turn on the fan whenever the coolant temp sensor is bad or unplugged.

    Re: Coolant Sensor

I am not sure of the temp. I have the digital dash and normal running temp is at 5 bars. lol Sorry , just had a passing thought about 5 bars! Anyway, the fan doesn't come on until it reaches 7 bars on the gauge and according to the gauge that's about 1 bar too much. Not sure if this is making any sense, but I'm not sure how else to put it. I don't have access to an infrared temp gauge and I don't want to open the radiator cap with it hot. Maybe I could pop the cap off when it's cool, fire it up and check with a meat thermometer when it warms up. Is it the LM or the PM that switches it on?

The trigger for the rad fan relay comes from pin 21 on the LM's red connector.
