I have used both cheap and "good" vinyl tapes...it never seems to matter for me...they *always* get gooey. I used to like to use it to tape up the ends of convolute tubing, but it ALWAYS ended up coming off.
Also, I have taken apart the factory wraps to figure out how to do it as 1-peice instead of the multiple pieces most end up with. The trick is to start at the end of the harness and wrap backwards. When you get to a branch, don't wrap UP the branch...just pull the tape to the end like when you started, then wrap back down. It seems like a "waste" but in the end it makes for a nicer, tighter, cleaner wrap that is almost impossible to come loose.
