I think that recent rotary switch I last testing is the better one, but still has small pins meant to be mounted on a PCB. So looks like we may need a small board after all.
I have some other switches to test also, and looking for a similar model as the ones I have that may be even better for us. I think you will like them.

Just successfully tested another MultiPlay switch candidate! This switch does not need and diodes or printed circuit board (PCB) to mount.
This switch is a panel mount which requiring a small rectangular cutout.
The pushbuttons are for up/down switching, and also has adjustable stops so the same switch can be used 0-3 for the MultiPlay, and 0-7 for the OctoPlay.

I only ordered one to be safe, but if the interest is there I will get pricing together and probably add this to the store. Seems like the best overall solution for those that don't want to use toggle switches.

Update on the switch solution.

I have ordered 25 of these switches shown a couple posts above, that is the pushwheel switch.

I will let you know when I update the store page to add them. There will be some other changes for simplicity also.
The only option for the switch wire will be the 8ft length. No one has ordered less and this will simplify things.
There will be options for:
just the switch ($16),
just the switch wire w/connector 8ft ($14.40)
combo switch/wire with connector ($30.40)
S&H will be $5. (this can all ship in the same padded envelopes)

Although I don't mind terminating the wires on the switch, I think that may add some issues during installation, trying to cutout for the switch, and pass the connector end through the firewall, and also the wire length should be trimmed down as needed for your install location.
So, I may see how I can add an option to select pre-soldered. Also, you will need to state, regular MultiPlay or OctoPlay as the switch and wiring needs to be configured differently.

So the option will still be there for folks to just get the wire and use toggle switches if they'd like to.

I am planning to make a design change to support 32 and 64K binaries. I am expect to start this once my CSX powertrain has been refreshed, hopefully the CSX will be on the road in the next month or so.
