    Torque Converter Question

Putting my 86 Town & Country back together after many years apart. I have collected almost all the parts needed but want to make sure I purchase the right torque converter. The car is an original 86 TI with an automatic and I am using the original block and trans. Unfortunately the torque converter went missing and I want to make sure I get the right one. It has an 8 bolt flex plate and 4 bolts for the torque converter. I see there is a 3 bolt torque converter and a 4 bolt torque converter but most parts sites say the 3 bolt fits this car but obviously it is a 4 bolt. Is there only 2 options for turbo converters?
This is one that I found and thought would work.

    Re: Torque Converter Question

Some things changed 1985-86 including 10 to 11 mm head bolts.

Cranks went from 6 bolt to 8 bolt flange with matching flexplates.

6 bolt flexplates took 3 bolt converters and 8 bolt took 4 bolt.

Converter pump drive hubs were improved and changed.

This is why converters can't simply be interchanged.

    Thanks
    Randy

Too bad you weren't closer, I have an extra fresh furnace brazed unit in the box.

    Re: Torque Converter Question

Lost my tranny in my 85 NY'er this past winter. Like Randy says the 85's have the 6 bolt flywheel and 3 lug converter. Reverse band decided it had enough. Had two 89 Turbo trannys that were very low mileage and good shape. So my dilemma, do I get my 85 auto tranny rebuilt for about a grand, or make changes to the 85, to utilize the 89 tranny? If I hadn't dumped a fair amount of time and money on previous repairs, I probably would have knocked it in the head, and called it quits for that car. Decided on the later since I had all the part laying around. New 8 bolt crank, new main and rod bearings, had to replace starter with Bosch smaller style, new larger spline axles. I did a few upgrades to the a413 including valve body mods., Sonnax beefier strut, accumulator mods, drilled and tapped case for external pressure adjustment, welded in a oil pan drain bolt, and new seals on tranny and engine. Some other smaller stuff too. Sad part was I changed out the crank in the car! Gluten for punishment it guess. The good news is tranny shifts nice and firm, but not too harsh. Zero leaks on engine for the first time on many years. Huge difference between old and new tranny.
Yes you need the 4 lug converter. What I found out is converter rebuilders are going away quickly much like the radiator shops all over the US. Use to be a converter rebuilder in almost every major city. Not so much any more. Your 86 should still have the smaller axle splines in them should you need to replace those too.
Good luck on getting the Town & Country back together.

    Re: Torque Converter Question

I probably shouldn't admit this but I've redrilled the flex plates.

The 3 & 4 bolt converter holes are the same bolt circle and 1 hole lines up.

Never had a problem with my red neck modification!

    Thanks
    Randy
