    not bad....

are your lines in good shape? as long as the steel lines have stayed sealed you should be fine. if they have been open at all, they will rust internally quite fast.

Well, I just ordered a vacuum pump that's made in the USA. JB Industries DV-6E Eliminator sounds like something I need anyway. It's rated down to 25 microns. That's not a lot of microns so far as I can tell, which is apparently a good thing.

The van still has the lines hooked up. I'm not sure what the sealing is like on them though. I'm assuming if I pull them off and inspect, that's the way to go? What do I do if they are rusty inside? I don't see new ones available. If there are fittings that meet the expansion block and the condenser I would have no issues making my own after buying that crimper kit.

cool on the vacuum pump. i have an old snap on blue point with a mar vac pump that i got for free from my sister in law when she moved into a house that an automotive mechanic used to live in.

you can always use something like clr or evaporust to clean them out. mine were rusty enough that i didnt want to bother. you can also buy an aluminum set for a car and modify them.

I have some evaporust, so that will be the go to if these are rusty. Thanks for all the help on this. I just want to make sure I don't miss anything and make a $40 mistake that goes right into the atmosphere.

The US distributor for Duracool was Durafria in Vanderpool TX. Their page is http://www.durafrio.com/ but now the page says that as of 2018 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring that the purchaser of this refrigerant is in possession of an AC certification card (608 certification for HVAC).

It may be worth calling them just in case, the number is on the link above.

A/C lines are still available. I bought some just a few years ago, then another set more recently.

    Which year van?
Send an engine bay pic, and one of the compressor showing the lines.

I have a new, never installed set for a K,G, or J body, they are the SPI aluminum tubes and fittings. Since I went to a later style compressor and condenser I can't use them. I also have the set I had on the 1985 konvertible.

Here is a picture of the van under the hood. It's a 90. The insulation on the lines certainly looks rough, but overall they don't look terrible. I'm up for throwing money at this thing to do it once though. Any opinions will be taken into consideration.Click image for larger version.

    Re: AC How To?

Yesterday I followed Brian's suggestion on using duster. For my system lowest temp was 46F with 26psi low, 180psi high. Day was in the high 80's in full sun exposure.
My condenser is original and dirty. I have never seen temperatures this good from 12a, but to be fair I never changed the system looking for lowest vent temperatures.
The duster was easy to use and less expensive that 12a.
I used just a touch under two 10oz cans, for a total of $6.50 USD for both.

Well, I'm sold. I was going to order refrigerant today, so duster it is.

That is the right idea but just make sure the diameter is correct. Mine works on three different size cans
Here is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/Robinair-1010...s%2C167&sr=8-1

    Re: AC How To?

Thanks. I ordered that up and that should surely fit the standard 10oz cans that I have coming. Thanks again.

    Re: AC How To?

Brian. the 10oz cans I have are 2 5/8" diameter while the ebay unit is designed for a 2 7/8" can.
Thus my concern with the ebay unit you mentioned above.

Thanks. I'm glad you guys have done this before, because it's totally new territory for me. I seem to recall a band clamp type deal that I saw years ago. I couldn't seem to find anything like that when searching yesterday. Thanks again.

Not if you have 608 certification
This thread got me thinking, now im pretty confident my experiment will work. I've come up with a viable plan, ordered some stuff and it should be here next week.

Let us know how it works out. I'll probably remain certificationless.

    Re: AC How To?

Y'all have me wanting to try the duster now. Did you guys try and empty all the mineral oil out of your system first and then add the ester? Or just add a little bit of ester to what's already there?
