Pictures of what is inside of fuel pump

I was pumping cleaning solution in a 1/2 doz heater cores and killed an old stock fuel pump. Hmm lets try another, yup killed that too.
OK lets see what killed the units.
Interesting that the copper was removed by electrolysis and later the copper plated on the ground of the body. That is so cool..
As you can see it totally removed several copper contacts on the armature.
I now know that the fuel flows inside the motor.
Here are a few pictures for interest.
    This is a 91+ pump

Miles, if you can find one, the 1983-87 Ford trucks with a 460 and AC had a hot fuel handling package. The electric in-tank pumps are low pressure centrifugal ones and I don't believe the fuel goes through the motor, but I do not have one to look at. Another one is the pump used on the Mercedes models with mechanical Bosch gasoline injection. It is a medium size low pressure lift pump near the tank under the car and looks like a miniature sump pump.

    Thanks Bill,
I decided to use good old gravity for now

I picked a nice little 110V pump from Northern Tool, it looks like a miniature outboard motor positive displacement rubber impeller, uses garden hose fittings and it will move some water!

Just saw this Miles. I used an old Holley blue pump. Low pressure but very high volume. The fuel doesn't run through the motor. Only thing I had to do was take off the 4 screws and clean off the screen that protects the pump.

the squeeze ball found on outboard motor fuel lines..you can get generic ones cheap at any automotive/marine store.. saves enjoying the taste of things you're trying to siphon

nice to note the reaction of the copper with the gas too..backs the rule against copper fuel lines ..ever

aw crap.... i have a couple of small copper/nickel fuel line sections that I bent up. I wonder how they are faring.....

also, i have seen steel fuel line with a copper inner liner plated in them....

wait... the one difference.... the fuel system is not normally pumping "cleaning solution".....

Miles.... what was the "cleaning solution"?

I know when I was running "cleaning solution" through my fuel lines that had some rust on the inside... it was CLR..... and I killed some old used fuel pumps doing that.

I looped the feed to the return at the tank with some random hose and then i fed CLR into the feed and back through the return into a cup that i had a fuel pump dunked into.

then i flushed it with the garden hose and then immediately pumped WD40 through the whole setup.

Rust was gone in no time.

Back in the day, drag racers many, many, times used copper fuel lines with no ill effects until the rules prohibited it's use. I wouldn't really worry about it Brian.

so you were doing electroplating.... cant imagine that gas will react the same as the acid. My copper nickel sections of line will be fine.

    LOL,
Brian I was cleaning my heater cores and pumping the 10% mix with a old fuel pump. The 12V was inside the pump thus the electrolysis
