How to determine Fuel pump health.

I am looking how to determine my fuel pump health as it is 7 years old with 100K on the pump.
I assume the main mode of failure is wear and its inability to pump at capacity and maintain pressure.
Would a simple pressure test be good enough by pinching the return line?
    Thanks

I pinch the return line and it usually tells the tale IMO.

    Thanks Brian,
What pressure do you expect to see in a healthy stock pump. !00psi ?

Yes, around 100PSI. Any pump I've had trouble with wouldn't make 90PSI for sure. I think the high pressure Walbro units have a relief at between 90 and 100PSI, but I've pegged gauges before too.

I remember a better one but i cant find it. the pics in the thread above are goofed up.

the relief is on the top of the pump. youll see a hole with a metal plug with a hole in it down in there.

    ill keep looking.

Thanks for the links. I'll have to think about that for the future. Although, if the pump requires that much pressure, the flow is going to drop off significantly. IIRC there is a graph on here somewhere showing the relationship.

yes flow will drop off but when the relief opens, flow plummets on walbros.

Interesting. I'll block mine off totally when I install the next one.
