    Re: Cooling issues

I used the petkock in one of my heads. Made bleeding the system much easier. I had a frozen plug on a head that I just had redone that I wanted to remove to install a temp sensor. Couldn’t bring myself to drill out the plug, so I drilled a 1/4” hole, tapped and installed the sensor in the plug. Could probably do the same thing with a 1/4” petkock.

What I found in my car is that the radiator fan always kicked on too late and that the a/c condensor was dirty enough to block airflow to my radiator. After I fixed those two issues my car never overheated or had problems again. Although it still does have a extremely slow leak at the water pump. 180 thermostat and an ebay electric fan are my only mods to the cooling system

    Re: Cooling issues

Finally got to change my thermostat today. Installed the (edit) Stant Superstat 45788.
And this is what I had, (2) 9/64 holes.
Works great in summer, but not so much in winter.

Wow, that's a lot of open space with those holes, Wayne! I was only drilling a single 1/8" hole in my t-stats since that is the smallest drill bit I own. On one unit I used a small trim nail to make a dimple towards the outer edge and a file to make a very small hole. Seemed to work OK in the winter.

Switched back to a non drilled 192* motorad today. Got right up to temp and stayed there.

I was going to get the 192, but I stuck with the 180. I'm in NC, and weather is already getting nicer. I don't think I'll put the modified stat back in unless something changes in the summer to make me want to try it.
