Gauging interest in a new high capacity LM/SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2 flash module

    Hello all,
The TM ECU team is "at it again" with a new project.
    Desired features,
    1) based on a new high capacity flash module that can hold up to 64K tunes.
    2) able to select anywhere from one to four tunes from the driver seat. This is similar to the FourPlay, turn off the IGN, turn a switch and restart with the new tune. No waiting to flash the chip.If you only want one tune similar to today's flash, that is easy... don't populate the extra components.
    3) use a faster less expensive memory chip than original FourPlay and also faster writing tune to the chip.
    4) one module that can be configured during assembly to work with SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2-377/SBEC2-652 and hopefully V8 410 SBEC2 and LM support , if possible.
    5)small compact PCB
6)support latch and unlatched configuration of PCB.
7)Ostrich support???? Is this of value?

If you are interested, let us know. We are undecided at this point, if we will be selling completely assembled modules or just the PCB.

Any feature we are forgetting? please let us know.
    Regards,
    Miles

I think your best bet it to sell a complete ready to plug in SMEC/SBEC aka ECU. This takes the stupid/lazy factor out of your product if you're the one controlling final assembly. Sounds like a great product and these need to be available again. If I didn't already have more flashable ECU's than I do cars I'd pick one up.

Thank you, I fully understand your thought. I did most of the soldering on the MPSciLink project so I know the effort involved.

Re: Gauging interest in a new high capacity LM/SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2 flash module

I just want to use a flashable chip which I can burn with my Burn2 and call it a day for the most part. I generally make the hardware changes to the engine, get the cal right, and forget it on my daily drivers. I would love to convert over to a SBEC2, on my cars and not worry about them dying as I'll buy every one of them in the yard for cheap and never run out. I'd pot over the whole mess in the SBEC and be done with it.

I cannot help you with the burn2 part.
I am still working on the SBEC2 stuff as you know.

So, does this just flash the stock board? I would probably be interested in that.

This new module will replace the EPROM so it will need to be socketed and it also uses the extra four programming pins.
So a 28 pin 87C257 in the SBEC will be replaced with a 32pin flash module.
This module is flashed from the Rx and Tx pins of the diagnostic port.
The flash can be uploaded from MPScan or MPSciLink standalone or via MPScanDroid.
This can be done today via

the goal is to use the flash modules for everything. faster and simpler. HOWEVER, i do have all the code figured out on how to flash the stock flashable sbec2. the main thing is getting the programming voltage into the sci line which i believe needs to be 20-21v. i don't recall if the new sci adapter miles did (basically the boostbutton sci adapter) can handle 21v volts on the ecu RX line. for the fcc, rob L built a flash adapter that applied the programming voltage when needed which was controlled by one of the lines on the ftdi cable. either a new adapter needs to be developed again or the next version of the mpscilink device needs to be able to provide BOTH a 12v and 21v source to the ecu rx line as needed.

bottom line, use the flash adapter!! :-)

Morris, yes our new SCI adapter has voltage protection on the Rx line. It can handled 21V without a problem.

Ok, 20-21 volts sounds similar to what Ford uses on the EEC-V systems. They need 18V applied to pin #13 of the 104 pin plug then use the paired data lines for comm with the unit. Takes me around 15 min to completely reflash my truck's computer.

the stock sbec2 should flash in a minute or two.

considering there is no support for a flashable factory computer and Ostrich is really the only option most of the time. I don't see how this not working with one would be useable other than the few with a flashable computer. Since I only have the one boostbutton everything else I use the Ostrich with, that'll become more common as the boostbutton parts fail over time too

Re: Gauging interest in a new high capacity LM/SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2 flash module

not quite sure i understand the ostrich questions. mptune supports both the ostrich and burn2 currently and has for years. flashing the stock sbecs require an additional device to provide the correct voltage for programming. once you socket the ecu - which you need to do for both the ostrich/burn2 - all you need to do is insert the flash module vs a regular flashable chip. what am i missing?

That was the total time from getting out the laptop and cable, booting up the computer, hooking everything up then flash the EEC and do a hard reset on it by killing the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) power. Actual flash time, around 15 sec.

The current BB flash is quite fast at approx 10 seconds or so.. According to datasheet, the new modern flash that I intend to use should be significantly faster but Wowzer is the expert on that front.

I am trying to remember the file sizes on the EEC-V, I am thinking it is a 2 bank 128K but they may 256K each.

Re: Gauging interest in a new high capacity LM/SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2 flash module

I would like to share a picture of our first draft of a SMEC/SBEC/SBEC2-377/SBEC2-652 universal flash board.
The idea is to have one board that is able to function with a large percentage of our ECUs.
We will now internally review the design, the next step is to order prototypes PCB for testing/verification.

Definitely sounds like a good idea. Let me ask a question, has anyone done any work on the NGC as Chrysler calls it? That is the one that replaced the SBEC2 and if you are using a 41TE includes the circuits for that, or on the RWD for the transmission controls there.
