Omni with 2.2 turbo engine codes woes

Hello , new here , a guy dropped me off this horizon with a 2.2 (or 2.5) turbo frankenstein of a swap. It has the small turbo , a 87 shelby z intake , a one connector pcm. And its kinda a mess...Ive worked on it on the flooring and now it has issues...

You know like when you do the brakes for someone and now the AC Doesnt blow cold anymore kinda sht.

Now I got this in codes after a battery reset. : 12-51-14-24-53-55.

Ive replaced the tps for a caravan 88 3.0 and nothing...im thinking the pcm might be shot.....

Idles a little high but as soon as I give gaz , it falls flat on its face.....I have 5v in the center pin. Of the tps and 0.1v on the other 2 pins even if I open up the throttle....

Please , any input would be appreciated I donno these cars a whole lot.

    Negative.

I got good mechanical skills , im just used to taurus sho issues , this is unknown territory for me.

And since I dont have a pcm to try , I wanna be sure before buying another pcm.

BTW , I got wire continuity between the pcm and its wires...

I think that code 53 is the big issue here , anyone else got a 53 and it wasnt the pcm?

Btw codes reads as tps , map , running lean (duh) , logic module.

Seams theres no 02 sensors , so all its got to know when to open up is the map and tps......

You 100% on the O2 sensor?

Were you welding on the car by chance? Working near the passenger floor?
The logic module is in the passenger side kick panel if you have the set up I think you do. I'd check the pig tails to make sure there wasn't any burnt. I've had those style pigtails disintegrate.
Check the grounds and grounding throughout the car.

You'll get a code 53 if the SBEC has had the chip replaced often times. I would start on that code 14 for the map sensor.

Re: Omni with 2.2 turbo engine codes woes

sounds like the 5v to the sensors or the sensor ground is missing.

    id start there.

minimopar.net has fault code stuff and wiring info.

also, did you weld on the car with the ecu installed? i killed one doing that.

which ecu is it. if it only has one connector and its in the engine bay, it sounds like a SBEC. 1990+ ecu.

sometimes the various year TPS sensors act backwards when tried on a different application. like at idle it will be reading WOT and at WOT it will be reading no throttle.

you gotta make sure that with 5v on one of the outer wires of the TPS and sensor ground on the other outer wire, that the center wire reads less than 1v when the throttle is closed and around 3-4v when wide open.

id put the original TPS back in and see if you have ground on the black wire with light blue stripe and 5v on the purple wire with white stripe on the TPS connector and the MAP sensor connector. on older cars the 5v to the TPS is an orange wire with a white stripe.

    Good luck.

Did it run when they dropped it off?
From what you described, it sounds like a wiring ---- show. I would point it out the door or You’ll be married to it for life.

also, the 60 pin connectors on the ECU in the engine bay can develop loose pins after all these years and can then do goofy things. try unbolting the connector and re attaching it.

wiring on these cars after all the years of heat and stuff can be iffy and need alot of TLC in general. check grounds, especially the one by the fuel rail bolt, and make sure the engine is grounded to the body, check all the connectors, make sure the fuel injector connections arent green and corroded etc.

Re: Omni with 2.2 turbo engine codes woes

For the record , on the blk/blu wire I got my 5v referance going to the map and tps.

And the car was running "fine" when it came in. Then I did the job and it sat there 2 weeks , when the guy came to pick it up , the crazyness began. No check engine was on when it came in.

Also , the air inlet doesnt pass through the pcm to cool it down , it was a p-flow right next to it. A buddy of mine said its no bueno.

Ok my bad the blkblu is grounded and middle pin have 5v of both tps and map

The pcm connector got greased up with dielectric grease , and theres no logic modules in the pass kickpanel , theres nothing there at all.

Re: Omni with 2.2 turbo engine codes woes

New and old tps outputs reads like 0.039v closed and 0.047V open
    At key on.

Almost sounds like a pcm ground right? What pin of the pcm I can ground directctly to batt (cause yea its in the trunk).

Im guessing grounding the blkblu wire isnt good cause this would be a signal ground I suppose ...

As far north as you are, the air doesn't need to go through the computer. Arizona, yes, Canada, probably not.

The sensor signal ground is different from the power ground (injectors/coil/fuel pump/relays). I believe there is some isolation between the two to prevent noise from messing up the signals from the sensors.

That said, grounding it to the cyl head should at least make it run.

You can also disassemble the sbec connector (pull the red lock clips out and gently pry back the pin lock tab and slide the pin out) and remove just the sensors ground female pin and make sure the part that grips the male pin is tight and not corroded.

They have been known to loosen up and cause issues.

Thanks , ill look into that. Meanwhile does someone have the engine electrical diagrams of a sbec turbo harness , on minimopar the diagrams stops where the sbecs begins...

    I have connectors index on the SBEC 60 way. IE Map=1 Cool=2 Battery=3 Sensor ground=4 Ign=9 ground =11-12 25 =Tx and 45=Rx for example
Is this what you are looking for?
I also have this in a spreadsheet for various SBEC/SBEC2

    OK UPDATES

Key on Both MAP and TPS unplugged I get 5v in the middle pin (signal pin) and the side pin i get 1v (5v ref)

Key on tps plugged , all voltages drops...to 0.07v.

    if i WOT it , ill get a 0.200v.

    what the hell
