    Can't install LSD in A555.

My brother is trying to get his TU LSD to install in his 1988 A555. He is using parts from a 1987 A520. I don't know for sure what's wrong but I believe there is a problem with the 1st gear barely touching the shaft gears. I don't know for sure what I'm talking about. lol If I have to I can get more pics and hopefully info.

looks like he's trying to use the incorrect pinion shaft, see the difference between those 2 shafts? the shafts have to match in order for that swap to work. the 1-2 speed gears and the 1-2 synchro assy arent interchangeable between those 2 styles of shafts.

Re: Can't install LSD in A555.

The shaft where the three splined areas are all similar is an 87-88 style, the other shaft where the two sets of splines are similar and the third set closest to the pinion gear are totally different is an 89 style.

That thrust washer goes on the 87-88 style shaft also, along with the anti-spin pin.

Re: Can't install LSD in A555.

Ok, this is what my brother Richard says,

"Thanks for your reply's, you are correct, that is what the re-tired Chrysler tech told me... (he is the 1 that is building my hybrid transmission)... my understanding is, from what i read on the forums and TU, i thought the A520 and A555 from 87-88 the intermediate shafts and ring gear were suppose to be able to be swapped... anyway in this case that doesn't seem to be correct.

I'm assuming the "pinion shaft" you are talking about, is also called an "intermediate shaft"?

In pic #2 the left shaft is from the A520 and the right shaft is from the A555, you probably already know that anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the TU Traction2 LSD, the Quaife Neon LSD (not SRT4) and the discontinued OBX LSD, all the same, just different manufacturers?

Also, I am using the Neon Quaife, not the TU LSD but I have both.

Is the A555 shaft in the pic above look like its from an 89? is that why it is not working?

So what I need is a ring gear and intermediate shaft that is the same as the A555 in the pics above, except from an A520, correct?

Do you or someone else here on the forum, have the correct parts to sell me?

Thanks a lot guys, i really appreciate your help!"

In the second picture down, the shaft on the left is from an 89 style trans. That's the problem. If you had an 89 520 3.50FD shaft, you would be good to go.

Yes this is correct. I am also "in process" of getting parts together a LSD for my two cars (568s).

As Brian states the left shaft is the 89+ and the OP mentioned that the left shaft is from a 520 and the right shaft is the 555(87/88) that needs to be replaced.
I believe the OP needs an 87 or 88 520 to finish the job, if I understand correctly that the right shaft is the 555.

Here is a reference document to read.

Re: Can't install LSD in A555.

    From my brother:

"Thank you guys for helping me to identify the "left" shaft in the pics
above, as an 89+. I'm not sure yet exactly what happened, but about 5
years ago we bought an 87 Daytona for parts, then scrapped it. It had
the 2.5 tall block under the hood, so I just naturally assumed the
tranny was an 87 also. Apparently, that was a wrong assumption, LoL... I
never thought to look at the round tag on the top to identify it, but
next time i go out to see the tech building my transmission, I will check to
    see what it says...

Also, thank you chromguy for placing the link to the manual transmission
guide to read, there is some different info on here that I have not read
anywhere else... great to have it! Nice Sundance by the way,
unfortunately, we don't see those much in these parts anymore...(Moncton,
    N.B).

So, what I need is a good condition 87-88 A520 ring gear and
intermediate shaft, to swap in place of the A555, "right" shaft in pic
#2 above. Anybody here have those parts to sell, or know where I can get
them? I would like to get my 87 Shelby Charger up and running before the
salt flies, up here in Canada, LoL...

BTW, I bought the Sundance new in 87 on Kempt Rd in Halifax preserved with "grease and graphite" the old school undercoating from the 70/80s

Nice, its cool went you can hang on to your 1st car (or keep your new car for a long time). Sadly my white 88 N/A Daytona was scrapped early 2000's. I would have saved it if I had been wiser then. lol
