    MBC vs EBC

I have been running a MBC for years and have been disappointed with the overboost and hitting the 14.5psi "wall".
The other week i was driving with Turbo-Aries and I really liked his EBC so I bought the same one.
HDI Dual Electronic Boost Boost Controller EBC-SE.
Here is the best manual as several copies on the net are incorrect wire colour codes.

    https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/7984e...9a4d26f6ce.pdf

The unit seems to work well, My kit included a metal tee that had a hole drilled into it...crazy as that is not good on your MAP line. I soldered the hole closed.
The unit draws 26mA when turned off as the 5V supply inside (7805) remains on. Perhaps it is need to save adaptives???? The draw is 40mA with LED on, I did not measure with the solenoid activated. During normal driving the boost solenoid is activated as the valve is configured to vent the wastegate when no power is applied. This is to save the engine in case of a fault. The solenoid is 5.4W which is significant and the output MOSFET does not have a heatsink. The solder quality is OK but the chips are twisted on the pads. I assume someone is making these one by one using a reflow oven and they are not using adhesive to hold the chips down prior to reflow.

The good news is the design is simple and will be easy to hack.

The other good news is it works well with very little overshoot in my one week of driving so far. I am trying to set the boost at 14psi.

I've been wanting to get away from my Perrin MBC, but I'm flat-out stupid when it comes to modifying in MPTune to make the factory boost control work.

How's the overshoot versus factory boost control?

    Been there done that.

Factory boost control does not work on MPTune. I gave up.

Nobody got it to work? I thought Rob Lloyd was using ECU-controlled boost all along?

When I stepped up to an FM Enforcer turbo, the car doesn't have nearly as much of the part-throttle fluttering nonsense as it did with a stock SRT-4 unit. So the MBC doesn't bother me as much as it did originally. But I'd still entertain a better long-term solution.

I installed the HDi dual mode boost controller since 2015, yes initial cost of $130 is high, but adjusting boost is so much easier and my boost level is pretty rock solid after shorting my vacuum hoses.

sounds like a pretty good deal considering the 300 odd bucks for the AEM controler
(not counting the 37% extra on exchange)

I have liked mine also, but even with the solenoid hoses about as short as I can get them, I do get a substantial initial boost spike.
I was hoping to have time to work on that before Drag Week 2019, but not sure.
I have a high pressure wastegate actuator, and was going to try a lower pressure one.

On the device itself, it has held up without much problem, however one of my LEDs went out. And during install had found the same issue with incorrect wire colors in the instructions.

    Re: MBC vs EBC

I spent 2ish years trying to get MPTune to control boost and could never get it to work consistently beyond 16psi.... went to a manual boost controller and had rock steady boost.
Now I'm a glutton for punishment apparently so when I found a greddy profec B spec2 for dirt cheap a couple of months ago, I jumped on it....
I just got it installed a couple of days ago and had it plumbed wrong initially ( solenoid ports wrong ) so I'll get back to fiddling with it soon.

One thing I've noticed about them is that they work exactly how a MBC works but instead of a ball spring valve, it uses a solenoid.

With a MBC you have to work on your pressure bleed off hole size so the WG line doesn't hold boost and keep the WG open causing drop off.
With an EBC you have to work with the gain to control boost spikes and drop off.

If a MBC fails it'll overboost, or give you spring pressure depending on how it fails ( if ball spring sticks open it'll go to spring pressure, if it sicks closed it'll overboost )
With the way the EBC is plumbed, if it fails or is turned off, I only get spring pressure so there is some safety there and there is the option to change boost settings in the car without pulling over.

I don't recall if mine is a Spec 2 or not, but I've been running a Profec B since 2005, it's been great. I have it mounted below the steering column, quick easy adjustments on the fly.

    Re: MBC vs EBC

I never can get the MPtune to get the factory LM to control the boost the way I wanted. It's too complicated as there are over 30 tables! I don't own a dyno and I feel troubleshoot boost level on the street is a waste of time.

I went with a used Hdi 2 stage boost controller and never look back. Change boost level in seconds with a button, it's well worth that $130.
