That is my plan, racing at Cecil dragway in Maryland 15/16. If we don’t break anything should be at 42.

That's encouraging, it has been my experience that tolerance "stack-up" and sloppy fitment tends to make stuff break that otherwise could survive.

On the braces, I'm guessing there wasn't any post-welding heat treatment done? I can see the welding introducing stress and distortion that could make you go one step forward and two back...

No post welding heat treatment was done.

This is where I think problems with this method actually stem from. Not the bracing, but the fact that the case really should go through a re-heat-treatment to get rid of the internal stresses caused by the welding.

I don't know if re-treating would throw off dimensions or not?... I'm also curious as to whether or not "cryo-treatment" might do the trick while not altering the toleances... would either benefit from having critical parts installed during? Thinking along the lines of a torque plate...

OK! Who's got some $$ to blow on a cool test project!?

I think going over the welds do help distress things. But I always have to grind and clearance the pinion bore after welding

Some more progress, still debating on steel or aluminum.

I didn't know there was an image until I clicked "reply with quote". Are the images working for other people?

Anyway, because race car, I vote aluminum. One thing I don't know it the wear capacity of aluminum drums vs steel. Obviously steel will absolutely last longer, but we aren't concerned with 200,000 mile warranty periods, we're worried about a few hundred drag passes and maybe 20,000 road miles. The aluminum will also tend to get impressions in it where the clutch discs ride (evidence from stock transmission cases) and depending on the heat treat of the material or any coatings applied this may or may not be an actual issue. Were you looking at doing post machining treatments/coatings?

I wish i was more knowledgeable about these autos, or any auto trans... but the band is riding on the outside of these drums?
If so, i vote for steel due to longevity. After this significant investment it would really hurt to have to replace those drums after a shorter time in use.

But, I'm an oddball, i want a super duper trans for racing, but also like street driving and doing dragweek. So i want a strong part that will last.
I'm also hoping to continue my plan of having these trans builds in Mini, Slug, and one spare, so that is going to be huge money for someone who doesn't make any money racing!

There more than likely going to be steel since the section where the steels ride is very thin from matching the 904 steels. Up side will be readily available supplies and wider frictions.

Hopefully starting on forward drum this Monday and waiting on band material to show up to weld end pieces on them. Once this project is wrapped up moving to 2.45-1.45 front planet sets. Also upgraded sprags should be close to being done being water jet cut.

Why are the images not showing up? I can see they're supposed to be there, but the posts act like there's nothing.

I probably posted them wrong lol. I'm pretty excited to see this platform to move forward, my bank account isn't very excited. I'll get some more pictures as we progress.

forward drums are still at the spline cutting company, so I have not been able to test fit. If anyone is still interested in these please let me know so I can get a head count.
