    Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I have a chip I bought a while back and I am having a problem with either it or the SBECs. First one would turn on initially and stay on, but not always. I picked up another SBEC and socketed it, possibly damaging something and it would no longer even do the initial power up cycle. I now have one I had someone else socket for me. It will do the initial power on cycle, but will not "trigger" from the distributor HEPs. I can hook up a TBI SBEC and it will power up and trigger from the distributor reference HEP just fine. Unfortunately, I was not able to test the current SBEC before it was socketed as the car was in the body shop having the floor replaced.

What is needed to (a) read the SBEC chips and (b) burn a calibration into one? Thanks!

I believe the Moates Burn2 will do the chips for the SBEC. The way to go would be to get an adapter so you can use SST27SF512 chips in the SBEC.

Interesting, because I seem to remember asking and being told no support for Chrysler systems. What adapter would be needed?

Shelgame used to sell an adapter. I'm not sure if the new Rob is still offering them or not.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I sent him a PM on the chip as he is the one I bought it from. I am just trying to find out why with it installed the SBEC will only initialize and not respond to any HEP input to turn on. If someone has a stock turbo chip I could plug in or a know working custom tune I could let someone try in my socketed SBEC so I can see if it is the socketing job or the chip that is FUBAR, then I would know which way I need to go.

If you are OK with a good standalone burner, I would recommend the TL866CS, even Dave Jones likes it.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

chromguy, will it read the existing chip? That would be my first shot, read what I've got and see if it looks correct, if it will even read. If not then I will look for some suitable chips and burn a stock tune on one for testing. I can deal with a standalone burner, I essentially do that when reflashing my Truck's EEC-V Ford system.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I ordered the burner and 10 chips, the burner is supposed to be here Tuesday I believe. I will hopefully be able to read the chip and see what if anything is on it or if it is just no good after being in first a bad SBEC and then various other places, including an anti-static tube.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I have used the willem burner with some success but i recently switched to the TL866CS and its much faster and so far no problems. I have programmed the electrically erasable chips for the 88 and 89 smecs and i recently flashed a few uv erasable chips for my 90 sbec. I also erased four of them at one time and it worked just took about twenty minutes to blank them out.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

The TL866CS is no longer made, I received a TL866II Plus. I tried yesterday and it can't read the chip I bought from Rob Lloyd a number of years ago. I don't know if the chip is FUBARed or just the pins are oxidized so it isn't connecting completely. If nothing else maybe when the new chips arrive I will be able to burn a working tune onto one and at least get the beast running. I primarily need to purge the fuel system and make sure all 4 injectors are good before I reassemble my 2 piece intake.

Let us know how you make out with the new chips

    edit
What was the error with your read? I find you must correctly set the chip name with the TL866CS. Is the chip labeled as 27C256 or as an 87C257 ?
Can you attach a picture of Rob's chip? Is it on an adapter board? The 87 series latch chip is discontinued with lots of fakes on the market that are really 27C256 that don't contain the latch.... I was caught on this one.

Ok, (a) no visible number on Rob's chip, it may be under the label. I probably bought it close to 10 years ago when I was in between using a SMEC or SBEC and I believe it was speced for and SBEC including L/U A413. (b) I will have to try it again and see what error, it had to do with the pins. Chip was properly located per the instructions for the reader/burner. (b) It is no longer in that socket or on that SBEC board. That SBEC would start randomly firing the coil and the Tach would swing ( actually bounce) from 0 to 7000.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

Further results, I reinstalled the software as "administrator". Gotta love Windows!

It at least seems to work correctly, I still get a "config error" warning but at least I was able to get further on the chips.

5276 407 SBEC chip, reads even though pin #20 is broken too short to go in the socket, BIN saved.

Possible SMEC chip, will not read gives an error message (attached)

Rob Lloyd tune chip (may have been damaged by questionable SBEC) will not read, gives an error message (attached)

The SBEC in question would trigger the coil randomly with no input and bounce the tachometer needle all over. It was not constant, once in a while it would behave, like an intermittent short or open.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I noticed that you have the chip listed as 87C257 but a SMEC chip should be a 27C256 or similar.

    first failed chip is 0x9704
    Name="TMS27C256",ID="9704",Class="27C256",Category ="EPROM",MFG="TI";

    second fail chips 0 x 2080
    Name="M87C257",ID="2080",Class="87C257",Category=" EPROM",MFG="ST",RVPP="5V";

Here is where you can find

a reference to the Chip ID

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

The errors on the second two seem to be from the programmer not recognizing the chips or the chips are not TMS87C257.

Edit- Sorry Miles I was researching that very thing and you beat me to it lol.

I like a feature of my old burner from the 80's, it auto selects the chip type from the chip ID. It works quite well but runs only on DOS and requires a Centronics port. I placed the software on an old portable HD and FreeDOS.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

Ok, I used the TI SMJ 27C256 for the SMEC chip and it read fine, so I saved it's BIN file, the one from Rob Lloyd will not read in either setting. Either he used a strange chip (no numbers unless they are under the label) or the questionable SBEC corrupted it.

Re: Chip reader/burner for SBEC chips

I am afraid if I try to get it off it may not come off in one piece. So far it seems to want to tear. I will see if a good razor blade will coax it off.
