    Identification of SBEC vs SBEC2

I am trying to visually identify a SBEC vs SBEC2. I was able to find at least one of each type that I could verify. Lots of issues such as no part number on the ECU and none on the chip. I have several that I cannot find in the ECU-LISTING.document or fiche. I have two picture, the first I believe is the a 1990 SBEC, I noticed a thermistor half way up on the right hand side and near the connector a wide ceramic hybrid device. The second I believe to be an SBEC2. There are two vertical resistor arrays on the right side of the board near the top and a thermistor to the right of the 60 way at the top.

I thought the later ECUs used a chip that actually took advantage of all the holes? This is interesting, because I never had to do this before.

I was told some versions of SBEC2 used 36 pin chip but all my stock SBEC2 are 32 pins. I do have a socketed one with a FWD stage 5 in 28 pin and works according to the PO. It reports to my scanner 4000 scanner as a 91 SBEC. After I create my SBEC engine simulator this winter I will test.

    Minor update.
I have checked many SBEC and SBEC2 using my OTC4000e scanner and the assignment in #1 is correct.

The one I sent you should be an SBEC2 it was from a 1993 3.3L Grand Caravan with A604 and Bendix10 ABS.

Thank you for sending me the 3.3L and it is more populated than the 3.0 version but I have been on the road the last few week and did not get a chance to document the changes. I did see two extra coil driver chips that can also double as INJ7 and INJ8.
I would also like thank Murphy for the SBEC units that he sent to me.

Re: Identification of SBEC vs SBEC2

The 3.3L and 3.8L engines use a coil pack with 3 coils in it, so that is the reason for the extra coil drivers. From what I remember reading somewhere a while back, that one is considered "fully populated" due to the fact it is a sequential injection and coil pack system.

Interesting. The 3.3 cars are piled high in my local JYs these days. If we could easily adapt those computers, it would be awesome.

The one I sent was from a 1993 GC, he had me just send the potted interior so it was a smaller package. I believe the "guts" are the same shape and can be installed in a car casing.

Yes I agree as the PCB part number is identical

Re: Identification of SBEC vs SBEC2

The SBECII original chip was 32 pins, I had a FWD tune in my car that only used 28 pins as well. When I switched to the BB Flash able ECU module, those require 36 pins. The traces should be there for all 4 pins as well as the holes for the pins. It is my understanding that the extra pins were originally used for development. You would need to read Rob's post when he originally dug into developing the BB Flash able SBECII. One other thing to note, the BB flash able module uses the first 28 pins, omits the next 4 (29-32) and then uses the last 4 pins.
