    Omni GLH Rot

    Hello All,

After years of browsing, I finally made an account!

I went to look at a project Omni GLH today (N/A). I've wanted one of these cars for a long time... the car looked great with no dents or scratches and only a small path of rust. But then I looked underneath the car and I was a bit more concerned. Since you all know a lot more about these cars than I do, can I get some advice on just how screwed I'd be? I live in the northeast so the pickings are incredibly slim for these cars, in fact this is the only one I've seen for sale in a long long time. I appreciate any suggestions! Also, I think the clutch might be going. How hard is it to replace the clutch?

    Thank you!
    James

The floors and frame rails are probably rotten. You're only source for replacements is to make your own or cut up a clean car.

I would look for a cleaner car.

    that doesnt look too bad.

pull the carpets and then take a pic of the driver and passenger side floorpans up front. thats the real determining factor.

id pressure wash the stuff in the back and spray fluid film on it.

The car's about 45 minutes away and I can't get back up there until next weekend. If I do go back, it'll probably be with cash in hand. Unfortunately I really couldn't see the floor or frame rails from underneath the car, especially with the plastic ground effects covering the frame rails. I'm afraid if I don't pick up this one, it'll be my only chance for a long time. These omnis don't come up for sale often up here, and a GLH is even rarer.

The ground effects don't cover the frame rails only the rocker panels. Jack it up a bit and you'll be able to see everything. The front rails typically rust in the bend where the rail transitions from the engine bay to the floor. The floors rot away right above this same spot.

This car look fairly clean from the bottom, once I pulled the interior I saw that I had a lot of fab work to do.

Oh thank you, that really helps. Now I know what to look for next time I go to the car. Hopefully the floors aren't as bad as yours... that looks like a hell of a job.

+1 on pulling the rugs. I had two 85GLH-T, one was rusted and one was not. I still had to replace floor boards on the non rusted one after pulling the rugs. especially look up the toe board under the dash, it creeps up high there.

Thank you very much, I'll look there. Anything else commonly wrong with these cars I should keep an eye out for?
Also, what would you guys value this car at? He's asking $2k which, given the condition and the fact it's not a turbo, I can't bring myself to pay. I was honestly thinking more like $1k...

Are you going to be happy with a non turbo car? One that needs a lot of tlc to make safe?

Well I'd prefer a turbo car, but the likelihood of me finding an affordable turbo omni around these parts seems pretty slim. And I have been wanting a project car for awhile. I'm a little worried though that this may be a little too much of a project. I'm a full time college student, so I won't have lots of time and money to spend on it...

You have a lot of pondering to do. Good luck

    Re: Omni GLH Rot

Alright everybody. Thank you for the input! I called up the seller today to discuss the possibility of floor rot and such, and he is very firm on the $2k asking price. So I guess I will wait for a better prospect
    Thank you again

    Re: Omni GLH Rot

Being that I'm also in NC, I spoke with the owner of the Daytona in the link above. He seems very knowledgeable on TDs and was happy to talk. He also has another ShelbyZ, so I'd be surprised if he wasn't aware of this forum.
