Super High Oil Pressure... what to check

Okay I installed a new to the car shortblock and got it running good today it is an apparent rebuild... but neways upon start up it has 90 PSI of oil pressure and after a full warm up oil pressure is at 60 psi... now is there anything that could be causing this abnormally high oil pressure that could be other than the oil pump itself, verfied on two different oil pressure gauges as well as pegging the stock gauge? oil is 5w30 anyone have any ideas?

You either have nice, tight bearing clearances or a nice HP/HV pump. Whats idle pressure when warm?

new bearings wont cause excessivly high oil pressure, and no high vol, high pressure pump will idle warm at 60psi

i would check for serious blockages, mabye oil filter

Yes it will, if the clearance is too tight, the oil pressure will go up.

Pressure spring in the pump---someone has stretched it or a high pressure spring is installed bobr19

That only comes into play at higher rpm, at idle, the pump isn't spinning fast enough for the relief valve to be used.

Relief spring set to pressure not RPM--RPM doesn't matter-might be 1 or 10,000-when the spring pressure is reached valve will open--it might be to tight clearences or blocked oil passages but if valve in pump working correct it will maintain whatever pressure spring is set to--- bobr19

Correct but at idle, the pump isn't producing enough pressure/volume to open the relief valve. It is NOT an issue unless the oil filter is plugged up.

at idle if not producing enough pressure/volume to to open a relief valve how is it almost pegging gauges??????? I once had a hyl. pump that would put out any pressure at any RPM--took apart and pump looked fine, like new in fact--removed relief valve and spring was broken in half, had slipped halves together leaving by-pass wide open--that spring will control pressure if pump is pumping against a restriction the size its meant to supply [bearings, filter, hyd. cyl., power steering or whatever] true at lower RPM it usually doesn't open by-pass as you say but his pressure much to great unless its 30 below and oil is like heavy grease-- bobr19

put in a stock oil filter and cold idle is still 90 psi, but rapidly drops to 60 then after about 2 minutes of warming up it's down to around 35-40ish

Still sounds high. It looks like the engine builder put a High pressure pump in.

X2- My bro's carb 2.2.. he tightened that spring and the oil pressure is high all the time. Idle or not.

    must agree here....
will never forget a simple oil change I did once .......
vehicle on rack, checking for leaks after filter change,
pressure relief valve stuck (dirt from shoddy rebuild)
filter balloned to 2x its size .....sheit....drop er down shut her off

learned then the relationship between pressure/volume....

and applied to the current prob...pressures have changed..
I'm thinkin a few more oil changes to get the crap out of the
    system....
