    1990 Shadow VNT question

62772[/ATTACH]Hey all, so I pulled the trigger and bought a 1990 VNT shadow. To my surprise, I noticed it had a SMEC instead of a SBEC. Thought the 1990 and above cars were SBEC? Any way, so doing some maintenance (dropped a socket into the snake pit of fuselinks) I noticed that one was blown and was replaced with a butt connector. Not good. I'm thinking about grafting in a fuse box. So my question is, does it matter how long the wiring is to this new fuse box? The fuse link rating is not only gauge, but length if i read this correctly, so adding wires to a box that are longer will not add any undo resistance? Should I up the wire gauge? Just looking to kind of place it in the same area, maybe grabbing a box from a j yard 1991 and newer? I just picked up some FSMs and will be doing some reading, but any advice would be appreciated. Wiring is not my friend.....

if it was many feet more than stock, you may have an issue. a few inches, not a problem.

did someone do a smec conversion? were late 89/early 90 areas of transition? pics of the 60 way and 14 way and surrounding area?

Here is the computer area. Definitely looks like some work done, but looks original. Really just want to make it safe, but if I’m going in, might as well do it right.

    Re: 1990 Shadow VNT question

All 89 & 90 VNTs were SBEC equipped cars. There were not any SMEC VNTs made. So if it has been converted to a SMEC style, it probably is a T2 car (converted). In 1989, they were all Shelby CSX-VNT's, and in 1990, if it had a factory intercooler, it was a VNT (in 1990 there were no T2 style, only T1 and VNT).

I have a 1990 VNT Daytona Shelby, which I have had now for almost 20 years.

    Re: 1990 Shadow VNT question

Ok fixed the Picts in last post, can just make out the 14 pin plug on the smec. Ok so it is probably a 89 t-2 5spd harness. Not the end of world, but I want to get the right FSMs. I have the 1990 ones. How different is the smec vs sbec? As I said, I just really want to make a fuse box.

You said you just picked this up, is this Bill Baker's old shadow?

If I remember correctly, his was converted to SMEC long ago to run the old Super 60 electronics.

Yes it is. I’m just going through it and noticed a bad fuselink, so I want to make it right. I had no idea he did that, do no biggie, just want the right wiring diagrams. Plus I have a socketed smec on the shelf I will play with in future.

Nice! I think the conversion was probably done in the early-mid 90's when the computer tuning options were slim compared to today. I think Bill had Forward Motion build the first setup when he ditched the VNT. As far as the wiring diagrams go, I would bet that he had used a brand new Super 60 harness at the time. I would think all the color codes should be the same as an 88-89 Daytona TII.

If you check the installed SMEC it's likely that it is already socketed. A lot of people prefer the SMEC for tuning support. If the SMEC you have waiting is just socketed and not flashable I would probably consider getting an Ostrich for tuning.

Yes it is a Competition Package car ( bill bakers) I have a list of things in order or importance to do, with the roof rust being near top. But this bad link is now at the top of the list...I might just install a fuse in there for now. I have a 89 ti1 shadow harness, and a 89 turbo van harness I can use for reference.

    Re: 1990 Shadow VNT question

just patch up the fusible link for now and get in the mpscilink group buy. mates well with a SMEC and allows thermocouple and wideband datalogs to be merged into one file. and wirelessly logs to an android phone or tablet.

that will make playing with the socketed SMEC easier later.

you should probably just find a 89 turbo wiring harness diagram and splice in the 91+ fusebox or a neon PDC. im guessing alot of the wiring colors will be pretty close.
