That was an expensive mistake!!! I assume now he understands the four cycle process and what each cycles does. A good test is to ask which cycle caused this.

There aren't many rods that can survive that, but those do look especially puny. Actually in this case, it's probably a benefit to have a rod that will give a bit easier before taking the crank or the block out.

i need to go back on the other 7 and put a dial gauge on the cylinders to make sure the pistons are all reaching the same TDC and there are no other "slightly" bent rods.

My car was stored for 12 years from 2000-2012. My gas mileage has remained virtually uncharged for years. For fun, last winter, I placed Seafoam both in the oil and two gas tanks fills at the recommended level. My fuel mileage improved by 12% even after I changed my oil and stopped using it in my fuel. I have been seeing the approx 12% improvement in every tank full over the last three-four months.
    It worked for me.

I'm agree with this guy ^^
That has to be about the minimum amount of steel into that rod and still be functional.
Which in this case was fortunate!

Sorry to hear Morris. Maybe a few weeks of walking while this gets repaired will give him time to re-run that thought process...

    OUCH!

Yep, if that were my kid, he's be walking until he could either afford to repair it, or buy something else.

Next question: Did you have to have your foot surgically removed from his @ss afterwards???? Because I would have kicked my son's all the way around the house for a stunt like that....

    Re: hydrolock

didn't know the whole "seafoam" story until i got it broken down and saw the rod. up until that point i thought it had just spun a bearing. turns out the "knocking" was the crank counter weight hitting the bottom of the piston (which was now laying in the oil pan). when i saw it i said "weird, that looks like it hydrolocked. how could that be.........." then the full report came out!!! it was a mixed blessing really, so i wasn't too hard on him. i expected to have to redue bearings, regrind crank, resize rods, etc. the rod journal is perfect as well as the cylinder bore so a simple replacement should do it. the ----- is pulling that bas...rd engine out of the car. dropped it out the bottom with the tran attached. learning experience for both of us.

all 4.6 were powdered metal cracked cap.
that DOHC motot was good to 8,000RPM and over 600HP on the stock block pretty easily.

    Re: hydrolock

How did this happen? I feel like he had to be feeding it into a vacuum line that just went to that one intake port. I have literally poured water down a carb/tb until the engine stalled just to show how hard it was to hydrolock an engine by feeding it liquid.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

ya. hooked it up to a vacuum line i guess.

good news is i ordered a used piston/rod off ebay, new bearings, reassembled, reinstalled and started it up last weekend. purred like a kitten. cleaning it up this week to sell it after i do a little work on the cats/exhaust.
