    5th gear holder tool

Lucky me I get to program and run the big stinky mess maker known as a water jet at work. It got me thinking about some of the more basic special service tools that would be easy enough to cut out of scrap plate stock.

The miller 6252 holder comes to mind. Would be 1/4" steel, as cut, no finish to keep the price down.

I would like to do these in one batch and do at least a dozen to be worth the setup time.

$20 shipped in the lower 48.

    Interest ?

    Completed.

    Edit: 6-8-2018

    10 paid/shipped.
    2 spoken for.
    NONE still available.

What a deal! Where were you when I bought mine a few years ago? ANYONE with an 89+ manual trans should own one of these.

Noob question ... what does the tool do? I guess if I have to ask, I don't need it? I do have a '89 5-speed, so?

On (most*) 1989 and later model year manual transmissions the 5th gear on the input shaft is a press on fit with straight splines and held in place with a lock nut torqued to around 200ft-lbs. This tool holds the flats on the input shaft 5th gear and slides over the pinion shaft after removing the 5th speed gear, fork and synchronizer which are retained with a lock ring/roll pin to keep the input shaft from turning while breaking that nut loose.

If you ever intend or need to work on your own stuff this is one of those tools that you don't absolutely need (you can get creative) but it makes the job 99% easier and with far less risk of damage to yourself or your transmission.

*some 89 model year A555's built for minivan applications are built in the earlier configuration that uses a reverse spiral spline and lock ring to hold the input 5th gear on.
