    Well this isn't going well.
    The axle won't come out.
I don't know how it could break and not come out, but doesn't seem good.
I can see the entire seal shoulder of the shaft, and the edge where it drops to the smaller diameter, so it is out at least 1/2 -3/4"
But it doesn't seem to want to come out. I've pulled, and tried to pry out with my balljoint seperator, but i don't think I've moved it at all.

Meant to ask, does anyone know if the Peloquin is open all the way through the spline?
As solidly as it seems to be in there, not sure i like the idea of having to knock it out by going through the opposite side with something. I think hitting it might make some metal chips. But i may have to try that.

Re: Test & Tune 1/8th mile, Thurs 3/22/18 Galot Motorsports Park, Benson NC

Just came in since it started raining for the last 30 mins.
No real luck. The only thing i succeeded in doing is seperating the cv joint.

I rented a slide hammer, and that cv axle removal attachment, but it wouldn't fit up in there because of the recessed shape of the bearing retainer on the drivers side.
Tried jacking it out with a ratchet strap, and no luck there either.

I guess i'll try to remove the passenger side axle, and see if it can get knocked out. But at this rate, it may be headed towards trans removal.
If that's the case, it may very well be a few months before its fixed due to available free time.
This really stinks, but i guess thats racing.

Well, if the trans does have to come out, at least you'll be able to change your torque converter to something more suitable

I wonder if you broke the bearing seat off the diff housing. Seen that only once before

Would that prevent the axle from sliding out?

I worked on it today for a few hours. But no real luck.
I removed the passenger side axle and sent my scope down in there to see what, if anything i could see.
After it looked normal from this side, i knocked the driver axle piece, and it freed fairly easy. It moved maybe 1/2 before stopping against something. Hit it with a bit more force, but could not move it further.

The driver's side axle hadn't moved at all. Sent the scope back in, and could see some of the splines for the driver side axle.

So, for sure the axle broke, the spline piece deepest in the diff did slide out 1/2" or so before it stopped against something. And the piece hung up doesn't look to have moved at all.

I tried to kock it back it to see if it would move, but it didn't.

I thought about trying to drill and tap the axle inside the cv joint cup, to try and use the slide hammer from the driver side. But i need a 23/64 drill bit for the 7/16-14 tap.

I posted the scope cam video to my youtube channel.
Here's the last one, after i moved the broken piece a bit.

I will look back on my pics but IMS I could not remove axle and ended up yanking trans with axle still in. Then I believe I removed rear cover and lifted diff housing and slid axle out.

sounds like it snapped in the middle. and then twisted the splines in the diff .

can you grab of the axle snub inside the diff with a magnet?. move it freely in and out?

Yes, i had knocked it around. I didn’t try pulling it back into the diff with a magnet, but it moved freely after thst first tap.

Have you tried pushing the axle back in and then try popping it out again? Maybe splines are twisted or burred, might have to work it back and forth some.

Or just beat the crap out of it from the pass side, if you can get straight on it. It's already broke, so ...

Yes. I've tried. It's not moving in either direction.
I feel like I've hit it pretty damn hard. But it's stuck in there. I know it needs to come out, but don't want to damage something else in the process.
    What a crappy situation!

So that was preventing the shaft from sliding out, since that race would slide through thr rest of the bearing? (Just trying to understand mechanically what I'm looking at there. And how I could remove mine.)
Removing the bolts from the seal retainer cup wouldn't give me any benefit? Is the bearing pressed onto the diff?
An exploded view might help me because I've never rebuilt one myself. Always left that to experts!

    Correct, couldn't slide out.

Yes, bearing should be pressed on to diff. In the pic you see the collar on the axle, that's the piece of the diff the bearing should be on.

Removing the bearing cup bolts and freeing the cup so you can slide it out will allow you to remove the axle IF that piece Is broken off the diff.

Tried at it again in the time I had before having to work nightshift.
    Long story short, no progress.
Futile attempts again to try an move the broken axle stub. I was trying to move it in to free it up.

At this point I think the only thing thst makes sense is after the axle broke, probably in the usual spot just after the splines, the remaining axle started coming out of the diff and and got hung up in the no spline part.
Rotating the stuck piece around you can see the gap is not quite even. So it appears to be slightly angled. I tried to impact it in a manner to make it straight, but no luck moving it around.
I tried some heat, as much as i could muster with my propane torch, but no luck.

    Good times.... not.

So the diff goes completely through like the OBX? ...just have to be small enough to fit through the washers....

Nothing to worry about on the transmission.
I believe the non splined part on OBX has odd "crosshatch" that you could get stuck on if your axle stub volcanoed/expanded at the break. I really don't think its a big deal if you damage this or if the damage scrapes up your next axle (will still break near the splines).
