Shaft ordered. Looking for bearings right now.

Can't wait to get a proper working transaxle in this thing so I can enjoy it some before starting on mods.

There was a thread on here detailing all the pns for the bearings. Rebuilding a 555 is pretty easy. It’s a good time to go hybrid or limited slip if you’ve ever thought about it.

    SET-4, SET-5, 5707, 4348270, SET-11 x2

The ball bearing on the intermediate shaft seems to be a mystery. None of the part numbers mentioned in countless threads are the right bearing when it comes to ID, OD, Width and having the snap ring groove.

    Here's a pic from a 2012 rebuild I did. Best I can determine, the part # is:
    6207N
    83A5958

I ended up ordering one with no end seals. I can post the part number when I get home but it's the same bearing others have already found.

I've got a few of those seals on the shelf that may or may not be correct. Someday I need to sort out all the boxes of leftover parts and figure out what's what. We stripped 5 transmissions to piece together a good 555 for my GLHS.

It has been a while, but isn't the bearing in the 555 supposed to be blue?

    Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair

I know this has been covered in a few different threads on this forum as well as others I thought this may be relevant to post the bearings I ordered in case someone else searches and finds this thread. It will save them from more research.

I have these bearings on order and will report my results once I get the replacement shaft, trans pulled and repaired.

I do realize the bellhousing end bearing for the intermediate shaft is slightly thinner but all I could find for the correct OEM style bearing was ONE vendor on ebay but another member on the forum said they purchased the Timken bearing from them and got sent a cleaned up used one. From what I can tell that is your only option for a correct thickness bearing as the Timken has long been discontinued.

Anyhow here's the list of what I ordered from RockAuto. I just wanted to get them from one vendor vs piecemeal through other vendors.

    TIMKENSET4Wheel Bearing$ 5.11$ 0.001$ 5.11
    TIMKENSET5Wheel Bearing$ 5.93$ 0.001$ 5.93
    TIMKEN5707Wheel Bearing$ 9.60$ 0.001$ 9.60
    TIMKENSET11Wheel Bearing$ 5.28$ 0.002$ 10.56
    TIMKEN3732SInput Shaft Seal$ 3.48$ 0.001$ 3.48
    TIMKEN3459SOutput Shaft Seal$ 3.59$ 0.002$ 7.18
    TIMKEN207LMain / Output Shaft Bearing$ 17.40$ 0.001$ 17.40

I found a post on here from 2011, which said "If the bearing surface on the bell housing end is torn up Simon/turbovanman offers a repair service that puts a sleeve on".

I have this issue. In 2016 I had a supposedly reputable race engine machine shop weld and surface the bellhousing beard end of the intermediate shaft. A few people on here told me it didn't look right. Wish I would have listened. Bottom line - there's a huge groove worn in the shaft from the bearing rollers. I haven't pulled the bearing yet, but I believe it is undamaged. The diameter of the damaged area is 1.322".

I'm just curious. You had yours repaired <3 years ago. Do you daily this vehicle? ~how many miles were on the "repaired" shaft before the latest carnage?

    Thanks.

Must be bad lighting or flash, because yeah, the bearing is a deep blue colour.

Far from a daily driver. The damaged shaft I showed pictured had perhaps 200-300 miles on it. I suspect the majority of damage occurred on the dyno though.

Damn, judging from your carnage I would venture to say it started self destructing immediately.

You had mentioned an original post where some said it didn't look right. I couldn't find the thread. Can you link it here? I just want to read it to absorb information for my future refresh.

    Thanks.

    Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair

    Got it! Thanks.

After looking through that thread I would agree 100% that the machine shop put a sleeve on over their welding.

From looking at their finished product from the end of the shaft I would seriously question what's under that sleeve.

It's a moot point now but yeah............now it's obvious their repair wasn't even close to the hardness of the original shaft.

    Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair

Got my part today also. Excellent packaging.

Also I can say now with 100% certainty that the Timken 207L is NOT the right bearing. The inner diameter is way too large. One thing after another so far with this trans.

Interestingly enough with the amount of noise / squealing that was coming out of this trans I was expecting FAR more damage to the counter shaft. It's bad but not nearly as bad as others posted on the forum.

I will load pictures in a bit.

    Re: A-555 Intermediate Shaft Repair

Just wanted to say that ajakeski is a great seller. I bought a shaft and going off what *SHOULD* have been in my transmission being a 89' Van 555 he sent me the appropriate shaft. Well after I tore the trans apart I discovered I had the other style. All I can figure is the shaft or trans had been replaced at one time or another. Anyhow Andy didn't hesitate to help me get the right part and made it all work as painlessly as possible.

I wish all sellers were as easy to work with as Andy was.

Unfortunately parts for these vehicles are becoming rarer and rarer which in turn creates large delays in repairs. I'm glad some people have enough foresight to hang onto these parts and are willing to part with them as needed.

    Thanks for everything Andy.

Now just eagerly waiting on the Quaife to get here so I can finally drive this van and see what breaks next!
