    Roadkill's $3K Hooptie challenge

Roadkill is filming their $3K Hooptie challenge in Tucson at SIR March 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I entered my van and made the cut! Here's my invite:

    "Hello AJ!

You are officially invited to bring your 1988 Dodge Caravan – Truck and Van Madness Class - to Roadkill’s $3K Hooptie Challenge drag race on March 2-3 at Tucson Dragway in Arizona! At the event, your car will be judged by our hosts David Freiburger and Brian Lohnes and might be included in our competition and in our new video series. Keep in mind this is not a guarantee that you will be able to race or be in the video show, but we will pay $250 to every invited car that shows up and stays with us until released. If you are chosen to race, you could get $3,000 to win your class and another $3,000 if you win overall!"

I've been to their Zip-tie drags the past two times they've had it in Tucson. I've raced my van and got a great reaction from the fans. It'll be interesting to see what the hosts think of it. The only problem is because of the higher elevation I run slower in Tucson, by like .8 of a second. Hopefully I can at least keep it in the 12's. I also have to devise a mister system for my slicks. I can never get enough water on them to do a proper burn out which makes for a crappy launch.

Why don't you just start your burnout at the back of the box but still in the water? should get plenty of wheelspeed yet be able to rollout 3/4 of the way thru your burnout to dry and finish heating them.

They wave you through so you're more forward. Beyond the burnout box.

I just ignore that guy, if he starts waving you forward frantically I just give him the nod and the thumbs up like, I got this Bro. He then gives you the headshake and look of disgust like youre an idiot

I just filled out the online form and sent it in. What did you enter? I think a 12 second mini-van is pretty unique and thought, "How can they NOT choose my van." That's how I figured I got chosen.

Ha ha, "I got this bro." That's probably what I'll do.

Here's two videos displaying when I have enough water on my tires and when I don't.

    Enough water:

I think that time would be better serve in other ways.

When you roll back and forth on the little water patch, the same exact spots of your tires get wet, even when you turn your wheel. What I mean is, when you roll back and forth, it really does nothing to spread the water on your tire. I'd know, I was there watching.

We need to figure out why sometimes your burn out is awesome, sometime is just... meh. With 460lb ft, you shouldn't need any water to make burn out. Watch the videos, I think the key may be not to get the rear wheels wet so they have more traction to hold the car, or maybe try different set of wheels/tires in the back.

Agreed, why are the rear tires not holding you back??? Are you using the parking brake or line locks?

PS. I contemplated going, but I just could not seeing getting my son's Daytona done in time and make the long trip out there....

My e-brake is locked. I'm dragging my rear tires forward as my slicks develop any heat.

Sometimes the track sprays a wide band of water, and other times the waterbox is narrow.
Either way, to be sure you wet you whole tire circumference, you simply spin in the water. Then pull forward to where you'll get signaled to burnout.
You need to stay into the burnout until you feel your slicks grip.

I can't even use my ebrake for my burnout, since it doesn't release all the way without yanking on the cable from under the car.

Sounds like I've been doing it wrong. I'll do my burnout in the strip they wet down. If they yell at me then I'll figure something else out. Maybe jump out and wet them myself with a water bottle.

Just watched the videos, great job! That was a really close race with the Toyota, WOW! Nice to put a face to the name on the forum. Way to represent the TM community. I was rooting for my friend Brock with the Monte Carlo. That thing is such a sh!tbox.
