90' shadow vnt wont start below freezing

Have a 1990 shadow 2.2 vnt that will not start when its below freezing. I "borrowed" the wife's hair dryer, put it on the computer for around 10 minutes and once it warms up enough it fires right up. Solder joint on the board maybe? I know a computer will be hard to find and will more than likely have the same issue. Anyone ever ran into this before and know of a fix besides a heated pad or a hair dryer?

That's a rough one. Does the fuel pump prime when you flip the key forward and it's cold? I'm assuming it cranks?

No fuel pump won't prime until the computer is warm enough. it will crank all day when its cold but no start or prime from fuel pump until its warm enough.

I would check the power at the ASD relay when it won't start. If you're not getting power there, it's the computer. If you are, then it's the relay itself. I'm not sure what you could to to resolve the issue if it's the computer short of removing the potting and checking for cold solder joints. That would be a lot less fun than finding a new SBEC and chip to burn.

You could put up with it for a while if it's not a DD, but sooner or later it's going to be permanently dead. Time for a new SBEC.

Where can I get a new one? I didn’t think these were still made anymore. It is a daily for now.

You may be able to find a reman one. If not, you could use a 2.5 turbo SBEC if you burn a chip with the VNT cal and install it. You may want to check out boostbutton.com as the new Rob may have one on hand. I would put up a post in the parts wanted section too. You may be able to find one there.

Oddly enough, my Jeep Cherokee is doing the same thing. Unfortunately my engine light burned out and haven't replaced it yet, but it's getting power to the pcm but seems like it's flooding trying to start (can smell the raw fuel).. after leaving key on trying to figure out what is going on, it'll start. I swapped the pcm for another but it wasn't the issue since it reoccurred. Almost seems like it's the Ignition switch in the start position. (Let off key and it'll hit a couple times and not run). I'm going to try turning key on and triggering the starter relay bypassing the key to see if it fires straight away. Again like yours, once warmed at all, it's fine. (Occasionally park in climate control @ 50* and no issue, only if it cools to 30* or less it seems)

Check connector at the computer.. might be connector pins losing contact.. my Jeep is the Ignition switch it turns out. (Flaky contacts in switch, still turned over but wouldn't hit until the key is let off, jumping starter relay, instant start it seems. Only got to test once so far)
