    Intermittent ignition cut out.

On my stock 86 Shelby Charger T1 I recently started having the ignition cut out in odd ways. after start up and idle for a minute it will cut out, i have to turn the key off for a second or else there is no spark.

    No codes shown

It stays running after its warmed up but eventually cuts out, seems random but happens less after engine it at op. temp. Sometimes it just backfires for a second but comes back and drives fine.
I've already inspected the wiring harness along with jiggling it while running to see if its a loose wire or a short, no luck.

    Ecu going out?
    Distributor pick up?
Is there something else that affects the ignition circuit?

Looking for tips from those much more experienced than I for places to start prodding.

Did you check the harness at the LM plugs? They are notorious for bad connections at the terminals.

These originally had a plastic type bag over the top of them to keep water out. As stated above I would start here

If the tach is dropping out when the engine cuts out, it's losing the HEP signal. That's where I start when it's intermittent and the tach drops out.

The tach does drop, I'm gonna be working on it tomorrow and if the LM doesn't do it I was already planning on swapping in whatever spare distributor pieces I've got. Ill let you know what I find.

    Re: Intermittent ignition cut out.

Thanks for all the help guys, unfortunately I haven't figured out what the problem is... because it went away...
It had been doing this for about 2 weeks, but when I went to go work on it, it refused to fail! Anyway, to get ahead of the problem if it decided to come back, I checked the LM and tore down/cleaned/rebuilt the distributor, everything looks good. Its running like a champ again.
    Thanks again.

It is recommended that we carry a spare known good HEP in the glove box..I do
Just like in the old days you carry a spare white resistor for the slant six.
