    Installing 1.22 transfer gears

Does anyone know the thickness/size of the shim/washer needed to install the vw 1.22 transfer gears?

I want to say that Rob L. posted about this a long while ago. You may want to try PMing him.

.25" I believe, for a full mesh gear to gear. One under the bearing, one behind the gear to set preload/endplay. I just sold my set a month or so ago to a circle track guy on FB.

See if that works or not.

The shims are from McMaster Carr, .125" thick each. Bronze I think. I turned the small ones down before I found I didn't really need to.

*You need to clearance the cover or grind the nut shorter.

Im assuming that's even with the later cover you need to run those safety retainers?

I would. There isn't much thread on that nut. I just dimpled my cover with a ball peen. It doesn't need much to clear the later cover. The idiot that rebuilt it last somehow messed the clearance I had up and it grooved the cover pretty bad. When I pulled the gear, the nut wasn't very tight anymore. It held 10 second runs and power for years with installed that way and partial spline engagement.

Everything is in that thread that I did and used. The OD of the small shims didn't need to be turned down as much as I did, if at all. It wasn't until I installed them inside the lip of the bearing that I noticed. I was matching the OD of the factory shim when I did it. http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...1.22+ID+spacer
