413 with 5 clutches in each drum

getting ready to start assembling my trans, still a bit confused on how i can get 5 clutches in the rear drum. i keep finding conflicting info on here, one post has info on grinding down the thick beveled washer and using 404 steels, while another say thing will break if you do that.

whats the current info on 5 clutches in BOTH drums?

From the knowledge center: "The rear clutch can stay stock, but the turbo/v6 unit (also neon) is needed, they are 4 clutch units. The reason this can stay stock is that this clutch is never shifted under power (as long as you shift sitting still). "

I don't think it's really necessary on the rear drum but if I were to do it I would grind down the pressure plate to get clearance. The rear drum has a pressure plate in the bottom with a lip on it. I would try to grind that lip down. I've never done it though so take that for what it's worth.

When I had mine done we measured the thickness of a steel and clutch. then ground the final retainer plate down some and found the thinest snap ring we could get. I think the total we needed was .06 or so .

What I did was leave the rear alone, use A404 steels and A413 steels in the front clutch to get a nice tight drum, and use the rear clutch snap ring. Never killed a clutch on my van in all the years of drag racing and daily driving it.
