Re: Straight cut gears transmission found!

    THERE be the proverbial "beef"

I was looking at the 689 (698?) thread last night and it occurs to me often that there's two euro van transmissions that are left completely out of our "collective" group
that and the 588 I have with the 408 gear - which I presume is the other one

and I wonder too , if these transmissions exist over there .. (based off the later 568 case)
what might they also have that might be based off the 520/555?
    or even the 525?

we have a few members over there we need to get them to rip into some transmissions and show us what they got

I've wondered to IF the getrag parts were actually recycled truck parts .. being German , it would seem reasonable..local source

and IF we get lucky maybe we can find a member with the TM bug as bad as any of the worst of us ..who likes fair money for bits N pieces

if the shipping part was a seasonal , "group buy" kind of deal it might be another plan

buy what you need , it goes in the group crate to be broken down and shipped out when it lands .. somewhere

as long as we don't spawn any turbo diesel death cults ...

uh #### my head just went to a 2.5TD dakota build ....the bug just found a new nerve

    edit
thinking about what I read last night , the slight difference in gear ratio (FD) might be accounted for by a different gear tooth design - one less and all the other teeth get bigger

.. it is a truck tranny ... I might even be willing to wager that straight cut shaft is from a truck trans too
(no I haven't peeked in mine yet)

    GTP trans...

It's actually a custom gear set out of a 555
    Input shaft is 1"
    Gear ratios as follows
    1st 2.85:1
    2nd1.63:1
    3rd 1.32:1
    4th 1.14:1
    5th 1.07:1

    Consular GTP trans

that isnt the only one in existence, there are a few of the straight cut 555's floating around, i've had the pleasure of having brock yates' 555 torn down a few years back, really cool to see what they did to them and for them, only regret..... didnt take a single picture.......

Start buying a lottery ticket, a nice VMC from mori or okuma could make things happen

I drove in the '95 OLA with Brock in his 85 SC and did some of the pepping and wrenching on it. From what I recall that trans came from an IMSA 88 CSX. Skip Pipe's car maybe?

Man that's a short ratio box! Too bad they didn't make it so the gears could be interchanged on the input shaft.

Re: Straight cut gears transmission found!

Way back "in the day" straight cut gears weren't all that uncommon for racing transmissions. Rally, drag, etc. Lots of pictures out there of straight cut gearsets. There were several pictures in the famous Hot Rod 2.2 book. They did play with changeable gears, but it created durability issues. That part never really took off...

I wonder what the durability issues were? I've been pondering this for a long time. I know if you have the money and the right connections you can get just about whatever, but so far very few of us have fallen in that realm! LOL

I don't remember for certain, but I think it had to do with how they basically splined the gears to the main shaft. There wasn't a lot of info on it, just something they tried, and it didn't work well...
