Looking for an A555 OBX LSD

I need an OBX for my 555. I may consider a full transmission. Let me know what you have and how much you want for it.

    Thanks!

Pretty sure OBX never made a diff for a 555/568. Only Quaife made one.

The OBX is for the 520/523.

    Yup only a quaife

You use an obx in a 555 by using a 520 intermediate shaft and a 520 ring gear.

500-600 for the obx which will need the bolt upgrade too or 1200-1600 for the quaife

I bought a quaife 3 years ago .. think more along the 1600 bucks due to being north of the border like me

Discontinued. We recently sold out as well. Quaife@$1113.95 is now the only option.

OBX is known for their "Out the door warranty", out the door, warranty is void.

Good question. In all the years we have sold/built the OBX units we have never had a failure. I guess when we have a warranty issue we will have to approach them to find out. It's possible they may have a few spare warranty units hanging around just in case.

Only heard of one failure when all 9 bolts loosened up after owner installed bolt/washer kit. They did not buy the unit from us.

Re: Looking for an A555 OBX LSD

Has anyone ever disassembled a Quiaffe and an OBX and compared them side by side? I'm curious as to what could potentially wear with these designs. Is the Quiaffe better than the OBX in regards to rebuildability?

From what I understand, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, the helical gear diffs work by jamming the worm gears into the side of the case when one wheel tries to slow down and the friction created by this is what makes it "lock". If there were, for example, ball bearings between the outer case and the worm gears then it would act the same as a regular open diff correct? Assuming this is the way it works, won't the worm gears get loose eventually? Is there some kind of replaceable bearing surface between the worm gears and the case?

Re: Looking for an A555 OBX LSD

I've put about 2000 miles on the OBX in my GLH. About half of those are road course, autocross and dragstrip miles. I did upgrade the bellville washers and bolts, so far it has performed without issue. I have not had a reason to tear down the trans, so I don't know if there is any visible wear.

Considering that the OBX costs less than half of what you pay for a Quaife, it is a good buy. I haven't heard of many complaints of failure, but it being a knockoff part, I don't expect it to be indestructable.

When comparing the cost of an OBX to the cost of a Quaife, you also need to add in the cost of converting your 555 to a hybrid transmission by using the intermediate shaft and ring gear from a 520. These are not easy to come by anymore and can add $100 or more to your costespecially if you have to buy a donor 520 to take the parts from.

The 520 parts will also net you a 3:50:1 final drive rather than the 3.85:1 FD of the 555.

I've always wondered since getting online why you guys always quote the 555 final drive ratio as 3:85 when the tags clearly say 3:86 ????

You may want to consider getting your glasses checked.

Re: Looking for an A555 OBX LSD

    lol
well mine , several have all said 38-6 not 5

    wish I had pics

I would not have asked without good reason
when I was still at the old house and still had a couple I even went out to check and mine did say 386 - and the tags were not rotted so they were quite clearly readable
