    Help with MPTune

Im new to the tuning stuff and got a flashable smec and the cable from Rob. Got MPTune loaded and working on the laptop and whenever I try to flash a cal or even when I try to read the chip I get "Unable to download entire boot program for ftdi coms. Only 0 were downloaded. Please turn off key and restart the process." I try again and get the same error. I have the com port set up to Rob's settings also.

    Re: Help with MPTune

    Hmm, try this...

DL and install this utility from FTDI (they make the base cable that I add the end to) - http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Util...g%20v2.6.8.zip

Plug the cable into your laptop, and then run the utility. Look for the 'scan and parse' option from the menu. When that's done, check the settings in the main window; look for 'invert Tx' and invert Rx' - both should be checked; and then look for 'high current IO' - should also be checked...

Thanks for the quick reply Rob. Downloaded that link and both Invert TX and Invert RX were checked as was High current IO. And it still comes up with the same message every time I try to flash.

What is your flash process? Are you following my instruction sheet for the SMEC?

You do have a bootstrap wire/switch hooked up, right?

    Re: Help with MPTune

I do have the boot strap wire hooked up to pin 11 on the smec and it seems to be working because the fuel pump doesnt prime when in boot mode.

I have read your instruction sheet on flashing the smec from the knowlege center but that seems like it was made more for MPTuner than MPTune. I have also read the whole help section on MPTune too.

My flash process is load a template, make the changes, save them, compile, load the bin file and hit flash, flip on the swich for boot mode and turn on the ignition switch.

    Ok, that sounds correct.

The next thing I can think to check is the Rx and Tx lines from the SCI connector to the SMEC; and make sure they have a good connection.

Thanks for the help so far Rob.

Ill check those wires out at work tomorow. I have had our snap-on scan tool hooked up to this car to do some monitoring on the other smec that was in it so I would think that they are good but I'll check them out.

    Re: Help with MPTune

when you start mptune it should tell you your settings on the left side of the status bar on the bottom of the screen. what does that say? it should say something like "ftdi usb port settings:com3, 62500baud,32k size". also, make sure under the com port settings that the usb boot baud rate is set to 7812.

The status bar on the bottom left of the screen reads "FTDI USB Port Settings:Com4, 62500 baud, 32k size" and the usb boot baud rate is set to 7812. Not sure why this time the com port is 4 when all the other times I hooked it to the car it was always com3.

The FTDI chip/cable does some funky things sometimes. Might be Windows fault, I dunno. But, mine sometimes wants to re-install the drivers, eventhough I just had the cable plugged in a few minutes ago...

By SCI connector you meen the one that the flash cable plugs into right? If so I checked those wires to the smec and they are good as is the ground wire.

    Re: Help with MPTune

Put an 89 daytona shelby harness in my sundance this weekend and but the flashable smec in that car and tryed to flash it and keep getting the same error as i was getting in my omni. Performed a system refresh on my Sony Vaio laptop with windows 7 and redownloaded mptune and tryed to flash again with the same results. Going to try a different lap top next weekend.

One more thing - you're leaving the boot switch 'on' the entire time you're trying to flash, right?

I really don't think it's the laptop. Sounds almost like it's not bootstraping right. But, you don't get a FP prime when you boot it. So, it's confusing.

    Re: Help with MPTune

How long ago did you get the cable from me? The early ones had a problem that might cause this issue. That was only the first batch of cables with the board on the end; from maybe 2009 or 2010.
