    Coolant temp sensor- gauge

Hey sorry for a dumb question. Got my Gtp out here to Cali and getting no temp reading in gauge.
Found the sensor , the female end was a standard spade fitting , but was RVT'd to the male end on sensor. The male end is cylindrical but does not appear to have threads to put a circular female fitting.
Have looked up parts but want to confirm what I should be getting.
Picture of how I found it - underneath t-stat housing on exhaust side of head.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: Coolant temp sensor- gauge

I just replaced the coolant temp sensor on my 91 Spirit R/T. On the TIII engines, the coolant temp sensor supplies the gauge reading also. It is not like the 8V motors that have a separate sensor just for the gauge.

The CTS on a TIII is on the drivers side end of the cylinder head. Remove the air intake snorkel from the air filter box and it is visible on the end of the head. It has a two wire plug that attaches to it on the end of it. The sensor screws into the coolant fitting on the end of the head.

I cannot tell what your picture is showing.

Ok yeah take a look at this one, please. As this is a Consulier exhaust and intake sides are swapped around.
I assumed it would be a one wire sensor, this comes out of thermostat housing.
The picture I enclosed earlier was directly under thermostat housing. ( and since it was obviously cobbled together , looked like a good choice)

The 2 91 RT engines I've messed with have the same coolant temp sending unit as the 8v. Separate from the coolant temp sensor. CTS is in the t-stat housing, the sending unit for the gauge is in the head under the housing in a recessed hole.

That sounds like what I have in the picture in the first post , no? Its got one wire, and is under t stat.

    Yes, this is correct.

First picture polopharm posted is the gauge sending unit, second pic is the coolant temp sensor the ecu reads.

I'll take your word for that, as I am new to the TIII engines. I looked all over and could not find a single wire sensor. However the problem I was having with my temp gauge being erratic, was solved by changing the 2 wire sensor I described. That's puzzling, huh?

Yup, snag a pigtail for the 8V gauge temp sensor and solder it on to replace that rigged setup. You should be good to go after that.

Barry - I had issues like you describe. Turned out the gauge sensor wire was cracked & brittle and would make & break contact when moving the ECT sensor wires that you pointed out as they went into the same portion of the harness.

Thanks for the tip. I'll leave it be for now, but if I have trouble in the future, I'll know where to start looking. Thanks again.

    Re: Coolant temp sensor- gauge

So it turns out that a wire going into gauge behind dash panel had broken off at the spade fitting.
I did take the opportunity to fix the rigged wiring at the temp sensor.
Now off the chase down a couple small oil leaks.
